This route was planned by komoot.
The estimated hiking time for this loop is approximately 3.5 hours. However, this can vary based on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
The Marsteinfjellet loop is categorized as moderate. While it involves a significant elevation gain and distance, it's considered manageable for most hikers with a reasonable fitness level. Be prepared for some strenuous sections, especially due to length and potential mud.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter cultural landscapes with grazing animals, scenic forests (pine and birch), marshes, watercourses, and large rock slabs. The path can be clear in forested areas but less distinct and potentially muddy in marshy sections. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended.
The trail offers spectacular views, especially from the summit of Marstein Mountain, where you can see Lake Ørsdalsvatnet and even the coast. Other highlights include the Vålandskaret mountain pass, idyllic ponds like Våland Pond, and majestic pine trees. A 'turpostkasse' (visitor's book) marks the highest point with the widest views.
You can start the hike from the parking area at Spødavoll. The trail leads through a farmyard and a traditional 'geil' (lane) before entering the open terrain. Please be mindful when passing through the farmyard.
While dogs are generally welcome, please keep them on a leash, especially when passing through the farmyard at Spødavoll and in areas where cows and sheep graze during the summer months. This ensures the safety of both your dog and the livestock.
Autumn is particularly beautiful for experiencing the trail's vibrant colors. Summer offers the chance to see grazing animals in the cultural landscapes. Be prepared for potentially muddy conditions regardless of the season, especially after rain.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Marsteinfjellet loop from Spødavoll.
The route is primarily marked with red signs from Spødavoll up to the northernmost path to Marsteinfjellet. When hiking towards Marsteinfjellet, following signs for "Dyrskog" is initially correct. However, be aware that a southern section of the loop, specifically from Marsteinfjellet down to Brunesdalen and back to Vålandstjørna, had its red markings removed in 2023. It's advisable to use a reliable navigation app like komoot to stay on track, especially in less distinct marshy areas.
Due to varied terrain and potential muddy sections, sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential. Dress in layers suitable for changing weather conditions. It's also wise to bring water, snacks, and a navigation tool, especially given the removed markings on part of the southern loop.
