This trail is rated as moderate (E - Escursionistico), meaning it requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness. While much of the route is pleasant, the final ascent to the summit can be steep and challenging, especially if conditions are muddy.
The trail typically starts from Sant'Antonio Aradolo, near Borgo San Dalmazzo. Ample parking is usually available near the trailhead in this area.
The terrain is varied, transitioning from shaded forest paths in the initial sections to more exposed open ridges as you ascend. You'll traverse the foothills of the Maritime Alps, offering a mix of natural beauty and cultural elements.
Highlights include the passage through Colla delle Piastre, which offers important views of the Stura Valley. You'll also pass the Educational Area and Artistic Sculptures of Ciabot Padela, featuring playful wooden sculptures. The summit, Cima Saben, provides a 360-degree panorama and features a traditional sundial.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the varied terrain and potentially steep sections, ensure your dog is accustomed to hiking and consider keeping them on a leash, especially in more exposed areas or near wildlife.
The trail is rewarding in spring and autumn when temperatures are milder and the scenery is vibrant. While possible in winter, be prepared for snow and ice, especially on the final ascent, which can make conditions more challenging. Summer can be hot on exposed sections.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike this CAI-maintained route.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Strada Foresta delle Piastre, Strada Meridiane - Monte Croce, and Sentiero di Monte Croce.
From the Cima Saben summit, you'll be treated to a spectacular 360-degree panorama across Valle Gesso and Valle Stura, with the snow-capped Maritime Alps forming a dramatic backdrop.
The trail starts near Borgo San Dalmazzo, a charming village where you can find various cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options before or after your hike.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, wear sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing suitable for changing weather, and bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection. Trekking poles can be helpful, especially for the steeper sections.
Hi, today beautiful warm sun, but in the shade a bit cool, most of the people who went up to saben without crampons, I would say a bit risky, yes you go up, but I saw people going down the first stretch with manecul. Slipping is a moment, then it's painful, sometimes even for those who have to come and pick you up. Thanks 🙂
Impossible to climb to the top: we had to stop at a 10 m difference in altitude. Too slippery even with crampons.

Safely accessible with crampons, youngsters can climb without them, but it can be dangerous to descend. 🤷
Always a nice ride, even in the fog! This was the first summit of Macchia, way back in June 2020, made with the Sun... Departure from Tetto Pilone, above Monserrato (Borgo San Dalmazzo).
Quick hike to Saben from Tetto Pilone via the direct route. Always beautiful, shame about the fog.
