This trail is rated as difficult. It features varied alpine terrain, including sections that can be challenging. The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) Hiking Scale applies, with parts requiring good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and alpine experience, especially for sections exceeding five hours or involving more than 3,000 feet of elevation gain. You will encounter thundering waterfalls, rocky outcrops, and sub-alpine landscapes leading to the pristine mountain lakes.
The Ischiator Valley Trail to Three Lakes (via P26) is a demanding hike that typically takes around 8 hours and 36 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your fitness level, pace, and time spent enjoying the scenic points along the way.
The trail offers several stunning highlights. You'll traverse parts of the Whymper Trail, witness the impressive Pisciai Waterfall, and enjoy a magnificent View of the Cime d'Ischiator. The route culminates at three beautiful natural lakes: the Lower Ischiator Lake, Lac de l'Ischiator du Milieu, and Lago Superiore dell'Ischiator, all situated at an elevation of about 2069 meters.
The best time to hike this trail is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when the snow has melted and weather conditions are more stable. Always check local weather forecasts and trail conditions before you go, as alpine weather can change rapidly.
While many trails in the Maritime Alps are dog-friendly, specific regulations can vary. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Check with local park authorities for any specific rules regarding dogs on this particular route.
Generally, hiking in the Maritime Alps does not require specific permits or entrance fees for day hikes on established trails like this one. However, it's always advisable to check with the local park or tourism office for the most current regulations, especially if you plan to camp or engage in other activities.
Specific parking information for the P26 access point is not detailed here, but trailheads in the Maritime Alps often have designated parking areas. It's recommended to research specific parking locations near the start of the P26 route before your trip, as availability can vary, especially during peak season.
Public transport options to trailheads in alpine regions can be limited. While specific routes to the P26 trailhead are not provided, some areas in the Valle Stura di Demonte may have bus services. It's best to consult local transport schedules for routes connecting towns like Vinadio, Demonte, or San Bernolfo to potential access points for the Ischiator Valley.
Yes, the route shares sections with several other notable trails. You will find yourself on parts of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa E14, Via Alpina Red R138, Alte Valli - Tappa 01, Alte Valli - Tappa 02, and the Sentiero Whimper. It also crosses the Ponte del Medico and Sentiero Balcone basso.
The trail passes through a natural alpine environment. While specific facilities directly on the P26 route are not mentioned, some longer alpine trails in the region may have mountain huts or refuges like Rifugio Migliorero nearby. It's wise to carry all necessary supplies, including water and food, as services may be scarce.
Given the trail's difficulty and alpine environment, you should bring sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather, rain gear, plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, a first-aid kit, and sun protection. Trekking poles can also be very helpful on steep or uneven terrain.
Departure just above the Ponte del Medico, above Bagni di Vinadio. From the Lower Lake of Ischiator take a right. Up to Lake Mezzo it is well signposted, but after that not much. The path is very stony and collapsed in several places, but there are several red signs and cairns, so it is not too difficult to find the way. Under a rock (from Luisa's cross) the path is covered by a steep snowfield: for safety it is best to climb the rock. Not difficult, but requires surefootedness. Lake Superior is set back from the path, in a very wild, splendid environment. From there the path climbs up stony ground up to the Ischiator Pass, which I didn't reach due to ugly black clouds. Next time!!
