Hiking

Embark on a moderate hike along the Ancient Swiss Pine Forest Trail to Lago Bagnour (via Route U51), a journey that covers 3.8 miles (6.2 km) with an elevation gain of 1732 feet (528 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours. As you hike, you will pass through the ancient Bosco dell'Alevè, where the dark green Swiss stone pines stand out against the pale green larches. The trail is mostly shaded, leading you first to the peaceful Lago Secco, a small lake nestled among the pines, before continuing to the larger Lago Bagnour.

Your adventure begins from Casteldelfino, where you will find a fresh fountain at the parking area in the village. The route is well-marked with many trail signs, making navigation straightforward. You will find another fresh fountain at Rifugio Bagnour, which is a good spot to rest at the end of your hike. This trail offers a consistent experience through varied forest landscapes, ensuring you stay on track and have access to water.

This trail is notable for taking you through the largest area of Swiss stone pines in the entire Alpine arc, with some trees over 500 years old. You will encounter an impressive 18-meter giant Swiss pine near Lago Bagnour, officially recognized as one of Italy's significant trees. The journey concludes at Lago Bagnour itself, where the historic Rifugio Bagnour provides a welcoming stop amidst the lake's unique broken waters, marshlands, and charming wooden bridges.

Lago Secco

Highlight • Lake

It is 15/20 minutes from the Bagnour Refuge, a small lake with trees and rocks all around that create a very peaceful setting. Compared to the Bagnour lakes this makes it much less. I recommend going there just out of curiosity or to fill the time, or for the passage of the trail to other destinations.

Monumental Swiss Stone Pine near Lake Bagnour

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra L.) in the photo with an estimated age of 500 years, 18 m high and a circumference of 360 cm since 2018 is numbered among the monumental trees of Italy. It is located near the Bagnour lake (2017m a.s.l.), in the splendid Bosco dell'Alevè (from the Occitan language èlvou = "Swiss pine") in the Monviso Natural Park.
The 825-hectare wood develops in the territories of the municipalities of Casteldelfino, Pontechianale and Sampeyre at an altitude between 1500-2500 m s.l.m. It is a pure wood dating back to the last glaciation and already mentioned by Virgil and Pliny the Elder, in 2000 the Bosco dell'Alevè was declared a Site of Community Interest (SIC IT1160058 "Gruppo del Monviso and Bosco dell'Alevè" ZSC / SPA).

Lake Bagnour

Highlight • Lake

Very nice and quiet framed pond. Active refuge in case of need (I don't know the period). Stagnant water, but which with bridges and rocks create a very nice landscape. Different possibilities to stop and eat or take a break around, as well as at the refuge of course.

Trail Reviews

Massimo T
June 28, 2025, Lago Bagnour – Rifugio Bagnour giro ad anello con partenza da Casteldelfino

Path that climbs pleasantly in the woods. Only the first stretch is a bit steep. Nice view of the Pelvo d'Elva on the way. At the Bagneur refuge, view of "dolomitic" crests.
