Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the hike from Carcoforo to Rifugio Ferioli?

This segment of the Via Alpina Blue Trail (D14) is considered difficult. It requires hikers to be in good physical condition and have experience with alpine multi-day treks. Expect varied mountain paths, potentially narrow or exposed sections, and scree fields. Surefootedness and a good head for heights are essential, especially in wet conditions or on lingering snowfields.

What is the terrain like on this route?

The trail begins in the picturesque Walser village of Carcoforo and ascends through woods to alpine meadows. As you climb towards Rifugio Ferioli, expect varied alpine landscapes, including mountain paths that can be narrow or exposed, and potentially scree fields. The route culminates near Col Mud Pass, offering stunning views of the valley and the Monte Rosa massif.

When is the best time to hike this trail?

The period from June to September is generally the best time for hiking this trail due to more stable weather conditions. However, be prepared for sudden weather changes, as snow can persist at elevations above 2000 meters until early July and can return from late September.

What points of interest will I see along the way?

The hike starts in Carcoforo, a historic Walser village known for its preserved cultural heritage. Along the route, you'll pass Gipsoteca Pietro Della Vedova, and the mountain huts Alpe Valmontasca and Alpe Vorco. The destination, Rifugio Ferioli, offers splendid views and is a notable highlight itself.

How do I get to the trailhead in Carcoforo?

The trailhead is located in Carcoforo. For driving, you can find parking in the village. For public transport, you would typically need to research local bus services that connect to Carcoforo, likely from larger towns in the Valsesia valley. Specific public transport options should be checked closer to your travel date.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Alta Valsesia Natural Park, it's crucial to keep them on a leash to protect local wildlife, especially in alpine meadows where chamois, ibex, and marmots are present. Given the trail's difficult rating and potential for exposed sections, ensure your dog is accustomed to challenging alpine terrain.

Do I need any permits or pay an entrance fee for this trail?

This trail is located within the Alta Valsesia Natural Park. Generally, there are no specific hiking permits or entrance fees required for day hikes on established trails within the park. However, always respect park regulations regarding waste, wildlife, and camping.

What facilities are available at Rifugio Ferioli?

Rifugio Ferioli is a mountain hut integrated into its surroundings, offering splendid views. As a crucial base for further ascents, it typically provides accommodation, meals, and basic facilities for hikers. It's advisable to check their official website or contact them directly for current services and to make reservations, especially during peak season.

Does this route connect with other trails?

Yes, this route is part of the larger Via Alpina Blue Trail (D14). It also fully overlaps with sections of the GTA: Rima - Sant'Antonio di Valvogna and Sentiero Italia - Tappa E47. Additionally, it briefly intersects with GTA: Carcoforo - Rima, Sentiero Italia - Tappa E48, and the subsequent Via Alpina Blue D15.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the trail's difficulty and alpine environment, essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing suitable for varying weather, rain gear, sufficient water and snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability on uneven terrain.

Trail Reviews

Roberto
August 13, 2025, Corno Mud

Tour done with Silvia. Elevation gain 1500m. The climb from the pass to the summit was very steep. The views of the Monte Rosa mountain range were superb! The view of the north face of Tagliaferro and the upper Val Sermenza were also beautiful. The managers of the Ferioli refuge were very welcoming. The village of Rima is charming and clearly of Walser origin.
