This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is considered difficult, often classified as 'EE (Expert Hiker)' by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). It involves a significant elevation gain of approximately 1290 meters over a long distance. Good physical fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy mountain shoes are essential, especially for steeper sections and equipped parts with chains near the refuge.
The uphill journey from Ronco to Rifugio Nani Tagliaferri can take approximately 4 to 5.5 hours. The total duration for the round trip, including breaks and the return descent, is around 9 hours and 50 minutes.
The trail, marked as CAI 413, typically starts from the locality of Ronco in Schilpario (1075 m). Parking is usually available in Ronco, which serves as the primary trailhead for this route.
The terrain varies significantly. It begins relatively flat, passing through dense forests, then climbs more steeply, crossing a torrent via a wooden bridge. Further up, it transitions to open pastures with wide switchbacks. The final stretch to the refuge can be rocky and includes sections with chains, requiring careful attention.
You'll experience wild and picturesque landscapes within the Val di Scalve, including dense forests and open pastures. Notable features include the Vò waterfalls (a recommended short detour), and panoramic views of the high mountains, especially from Rifugio Nani Tagliaferri itself. You might also spot the Tagliaferri Eagle Sculpture and visit the Wildlife Observatory.
The area is part of a wildlife reserve, offering opportunities to spot local fauna such as marmots and chamois. Hikers should also be aware of the presence of Vipera aspis.
The trail is best undertaken during the summer months, typically from May to October. Outside of this period, snow and ice can make the route impassable or dangerous due to its high elevation and challenging sections.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Orobie Alps, given the trail's difficult classification, significant elevation gain, rocky sections, and equipped parts with chains, it may not be suitable for all dogs. Owners should assess their dog's fitness and agility carefully. Always keep dogs on a leash, especially in wildlife areas.
No specific permits or entrance fees are generally required to hike this trail or to access the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. However, visitors should always respect park regulations regarding waste, noise, and wildlife protection.
Rifugio Nani Tagliaferri, the highest refuge in the Bergamo Orobie Alps, offers typical local cuisine and accommodation with 60 beds. It's a great place to rest and refuel before your descent.
Yes, this route intersects with several other official trails. Along the way, you'll find sections of the La Via Decia - Tappa 3, Itinerario Naturalistico Antonio Curò - Tappa 3, Sentiero Italia - Tappa D22S, Gran Via delle Orobie - Tappa 10, and Alla scoperta di Schilpario.
The trail follows an old mule track, which were crucial paths used for military logistics during World War I in the Alps. While the direct combat connection of this specific route isn't detailed, it represents a testament to the historical infrastructure used during that period.
Long but not overly demanding route. The path does not present particular problems. In the last kilometres, three chains help hikers
I recommend bringing water. There are no places to fill your water bottle along the route.
The Nani Tagliaferri Refuge has always been my favourite. Maybe because as a boy he was the first. Perhaps because it is the destination of a fabulous night excursion, which I will remember for life, the fact is, my eyes light up every time I talk about it. November 21, 2022 I decide to go there after a long time. I leave late, I stop to photograph animals, I find a lot of ice and snow in the upper part and I arrive at about 2100 meters when it starts to get dark. The shelter is nearby, you can see it, but I'm alone and I prefer to go back to the car. Davide zero, Tagliaferri refuge one. Today July 13, 2023 I try again. Weather forecast not excellent, but not prohibitive either. First kilometers with very blue sky. Water everywhere, the path looks like a torrent. At the Venano di mezzo malga, the sky offers a few clouds, but they don't seem bad. At the Venano di Sopra malga I get there washed up for a few meters. A water bomb that doesn't even give you time to take out your raincoat. An hour and a half of abundant water, accompanied by hail. Luckily the shepherds, wonderful and very kind people, host me in the house. Great respect for these people who too often suffer the rudeness of Sunday hikers and for their dogs, one nicer than the other. I am advised not to continue unless necessary and I decide to walk across the wide and stupendous plateau. There are waterfalls by the hundreds that fall from the mountains that surround me. I learn that whoever tried to reach the shelter arrived wetter than a trout and worried about not having a single dry spare. However a beautiful sun, a blue sky make me decide to continue. I see the flag getting closer, but arrived at the same spot as November 2022, second water bomb. It will last an hour or more. I decide to take shelter under a boulder. I meet other people who go down and warn me that in the area of the 2 fords with chains, the water exceeds the knees. I go to the mountains to have fun, and just like in November, I throw in the towel. Davide zero, Tagliaferri refuge two. While descending, a stupendous sun came out and the flag of the refuge was really close, but perhaps it is better to let the mountain win sometimes, if the price you pay is low after all. Appointment postponed to soon.
