Hiking

Explore the natural beauty of Palmaria Island on a moderate loop trail, covering 3.9 miles (6.2 km) with an elevation gain of 803 feet (245 metres). This hike typically takes around 2 hours and 14 minutes to complete, offering a journey through varied landscapes. You will walk through Mediterranean scrub, where free-roaming goats are sometimes seen, and ascend to viewpoints that provide clear sightlines of the iconic San Pietro Church across the water. The path circles the island, taking you past pristine shorelines and up high slopes, giving you a feel for the island's wild atmosphere.

To begin this island adventure, you will need to catch a ferry from Porto Venere's harbor. Regular shuttle boats make the short crossing to Palmaria, dropping you off at Terrizzo, where the 510 trail awaits. The path is well-marked, so you can focus on the scenery without needing a map. Plan your visit to allow ample time for the ferry journey and the hike itself.

This trail offers a distinct experience compared to the more frequented paths along the Cinque Terre coast. You will find fewer people here, allowing for a more relaxed connection with nature. The island's history is also present, with sites like the historic Forte Cavour, a 19th-century military fortress, adding another layer to your exploration.

Fort Cavour

Highlight • Historical Site

Nineteenth-century fort, it housed 330 soldiers. It is now in a rather abandoned and inaccessible state. You can go around passing over the walls, being very careful. You can clearly see the bastions, the entrance with drawbridge and a deep moat now colonized by Mediterranean scrub: strawberry tree, mastic tree, viburnum, heather, myrtle...

With my friend on the motorboat from La Spezia, I didn't want to miss the opportunity of the circular hike. Short but crisp round with great viewpoints.

The journey by 🚌 to Porto Venere from La Spezia Centrale train station was quite interesting, as it led for miles past military forts of the Italian Navy on the Gulf of La Spezia. We also saw the large warships moored there.

From Porto Venere, we took a small ferry to the island of Palmaria.

this tour is definitely NOTHING for flip-flops and sandals 😩

Really nice trip. You need to have good shoes and plenty of water. Lots of climbs, not particularly difficult.... I recommend you take this route in spring and autumn.

Today excursion in Liguria, Palmaria island with the cai. Simple suitable for everyone. Except for a couple of spots where it was almost necessary to sit down

I don't understand komoot...I walked for at least 2 hours at a calm pace, I certainly didn't run

Both Portovenere and Palmaria island are gems... But, in terms of cleaning maintenance, they make themselves desired... Another consideration, when you're in those places, you think you're eating fresh fish, instead... it's not like that.. I am referring to the inn located on the Palmaria island...

We left counterclockwise at 11. At the top we stayed an hour visiting the garden and enjoying the island at 360 degrees. We arrived in Terrizzo at 3.30 pm with a stop for lunch in Pozzale. The time taken is longer ... I don't know how the app calculates it.
