This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is rated as difficult, requiring a good level of fitness, sure-footedness, and prior alpine experience. Sections like the 'Via della Ganda' and the 'wall of tears' involve significant elevation gains, steep inclines, loose scree, and some fixed ropes or chains for support.
The trail typically starts with gentler paths through beech forests and meadows. As you ascend, the terrain becomes progressively rockier, transitioning into alpine pastures and exposed rocky outcrops. You'll encounter steep scree and some scrambling over rocks, especially on the final approach to the summit. The limestone Grigna massif also means the area is rich in caves.
Hikers are treated to breathtaking views throughout the journey. Highlights include the View of Cortenova and the surrounding peaks, and the View of Monte Legnone and Monte Muggio. From the summit at Rifugio Brioschi, a spectacular 360-degree panorama unfolds, revealing the Lombardy plains, the vast expanse of the Alps, and the beautiful Lombard lakes, including Lake Como.
The best time to hike this trail is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when the paths are clear of snow. Hiking in winter conditions presents a significantly greater challenge due to snow, ice, and cold, requiring specialized equipment and experience.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in this region, the challenging and rocky terrain, especially sections with fixed ropes and steep scree, might not be suitable for all dogs. Consider your dog's fitness and agility before bringing them on this difficult route.
No, there are typically no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike within the Parco Regionale della Grigna Settentrionale. However, always respect local regulations and leave no trace.
The trail typically starts from Esino Lario. Specific parking information for the trailhead in Esino Lario can vary, so it's advisable to check local signage or official park websites for the most current parking options before your visit.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa D12S and the Via della Ganda. You may also encounter parts of the Cresta di Piancaformia - Rifugio Brioschi and the Grigne Skymarathon routes.
Rifugio Brioschi, inaugurated in 1895, is one of the highest mountain huts in the region. It offers basic accommodation, food, and drinks, serving as a crucial refuge and a rewarding destination with unparalleled views from its commanding position on the Grigna Settentrionale peak.
Yes, you will pass by the Arnaldo Bogani Mountain Hut, which can serve as a stop before the final ascent to Rifugio Brioschi. There is also a Directional Signpost to Rifugio Bogani, Rifugio Brioschi, Rifugio Bietti, and Monte Croce.
Public transport options to Esino Lario can be limited, especially outside of peak tourist season. It's recommended to check local bus schedules or consider driving to the trailhead. Some hikers also start from Cainallo, which might have different access options.
Excursion with friends, slow speed to keep up with the slowest, the Piancaformia ridge was followed until the end of the yellow markers, the last stretch is not marked, in my track you will see a test climb on the ridge where I gave up because of the wet rock that did not guarantee me a good grip. So we continued on the normal route.
The return from Bogani, following path 19, I wouldn't do it again. There is a short but decidedly demanding passage (with a chain but very exposed)
Circular route from Parcheggio Cainallo passing through: - Bocchetta di Prada (1.7 km) - Votive Chapel Brigata Poletti (1.9 km) - Bocchetta di Piancaformia (2.8 km) - Cima di Piancaformia (3.7 km) - Bocchetta del Guzzi (4.0 km) - Grigna Settentrionale (5.5 km) - Rifugio Bogani (8.1 km)
Departing from Cainallo, our first stop is the famous Porta di Prada, a rock arch whose sight is certainly impressive. The climb that takes us to the Piancaformia ridge is steep at first and on very slippery terrain. It's not suitable for everyone, as is the ridge route. It's fine if you're fit, enjoy grade II climbing, don't suffer from vertigo, and don't mind having a gap to your right or left. Otherwise, it's best avoided. The final stretch is on the Ganda, but the ridge would continue all the way to below the Brioschi. Return via the Ganda route, passing by the Bogani refuge.
The destination was the Brioschi refuge. It was not possible to reach it due to the snow.
The track was saved shorter (see map point A and B) due to incorrect MULTISPORT registration in reality B ends at the same as point A So the real total ascent is +- 1,091 m and the km are 12.5 AR, Travel times A/R (without stops) from 2- to 3 hours
A classic of the Lecco area, the Via della Ganda on the northern side of the northern Grigna, in these conditions transforms into an authentic adventure in a wild and solitary environment, where the snow combined with the conformation of the land creates plays of light that continuously change depending on of the inclination of the sun. Never difficult, but not trivial either, some traverses to be followed carefully. Brioschi and Bogani refuge are excellent support points.
