This route was planned by komoot.
While komoot classifies this stage as 'difficult', it is generally considered an easy and enjoyable hike for pleasure hikers with a good baseline of fitness. The path is well-maintained, and elevation changes are moderate. Expect to walk for around 5 to 7 hours to complete the approximately 20-22 km route.
You'll start in the historic Lombard town of Cividale del Friuli, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The trail then ascends towards Castelmonte, a pilgrimage village offering wonderful views. You'll also pass through the renowned Collio wine region, characterized by vineyards, orchards, and olive groves, with romantic villages perched on hills. Don't miss the Collio vineyards near Cividale.
The moderate terrain makes this stage generally suitable for families with older children who are accustomed to longer walks. For dogs, the trail is typically dog-friendly, but always keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through vineyards, near livestock, or in populated areas. Always carry water for your dog.
The best times to hike this stage are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is pleasant, and the scenery, especially the vineyards, is particularly beautiful. Summer can be hot, while winter might bring colder temperatures and potentially less accessible paths.
You can find parking in Cividale del Friuli, the starting point. For public transport, Cividale del Friuli is accessible by bus and train. Prepotto, the end point, also has bus connections, though these might be less frequent. It's advisable to check local bus schedules in advance for your return journey or to arrange a shuttle.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike Stage 29 of the Alpe Adria Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
The terrain is varied but generally easy, consisting of good paths. You'll experience a mix of historic town streets, gentle ascents to viewpoints, and paths winding through vineyards, orchards, and small villages in the Collio wine region. The route also features numerous churches along the Italian-Slovenian border.
Yes, Cividale del Friuli offers various accommodation and dining options. Along the route, especially in the Collio wine region, you'll find opportunities for wine tasting and local eateries. The Villa Pittoricca – Stanig Farm is one such highlight. Prepotto also has some options for refreshments and accommodation.
Yes, this stage of the Alpe Adria Trail intersects with several other paths. Notably, it shares sections with the Alpe Adria Trail E29, SICAI Ciclo, and the FVG 3/d "Variante dei vigneti". You might also encounter parts of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa A19 and the Via Alpina Yellow B5.
Given the duration and varied terrain, it's recommended to bring comfortable hiking shoes, sufficient water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing suitable for changing weather. A camera is also a good idea to capture the scenic views and cultural highlights.
Yes, you can find the Alpe Adria Trail Infopoint Cividale del Friuli, which can provide additional information and resources for your hike.
First stage on the last section of the Alpe-Adria-Trail with extremely pleasant temperatures. The highlight in the literal and figurative sense is the arrival at the very nice accommodation in Breg.
Today's hike felt more like a pleasant stroll to us. It was flat, and we walked past vines, fig trees, grapevines, olive trees, and grapevines. The only people we encountered were construction workers repairing the roads. There were at least four construction sites. We also encountered an unexpected rain. Everything was fine 🌞. By the way, we're back in Slovenia, where we'll be hiking tomorrow.
