This challenging hike from Obstansersee to Hollbrucker Spitze is estimated to take around 7.5 hours (27021 seconds) to complete. This duration accounts for the difficult terrain and significant elevation changes.
The terrain is varied and demanding, characteristic of high-alpine routes. You'll encounter forest trails, plateaus, and steeper slopes. The ascent to the summit of Hollbrucker Spitze features exposed, yet straightforward climbing sections and a short, rocky summit ridge that requires surefootedness. Expect breathtaking views into the Italian Dolomites.
This section is classified as difficult. The entire Südalpenweg 03 is known for being demanding, requiring surefootedness, a good head for heights, and navigational skills. The rocky summit ridge of Hollbrucker Spitze, in particular, should not be underestimated, and ice buildup or cornices can add to the challenge.
You'll encounter several notable points of interest. Highlights include the serene Lake Obstanser and Herzlsee. You'll also pass significant historical sites like a World War I Military Position and the Hochgränten War Cemetery. For panoramic views, you'll reach summits such as Eisenreich (Montagna del Ferro) Summit, Schöntalhöhe, and Monte Demut (La Muta) Summit, before reaching the main goal, Hollbrucker Spitze.
Given its high-alpine character and potential for ice and cornices, the best time to hike this trail is typically during the summer months, from late June to early September, when snow has largely melted and conditions are most stable. Always check local weather and trail conditions before you go.
While dogs are generally allowed on hiking trails in the region, the difficult and exposed nature of this specific route, especially the rocky summit ridge of Hollbrucker Spitze, may not be suitable for all dogs. Consider your dog's fitness, surefootedness, and comfort with heights before bringing them on this particular section.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this section of the Südalpenweg 03. However, it's always advisable to check with local tourism offices or alpine clubs for any updated regulations, especially if you plan to stay overnight in huts.
This specific section of the Südalpenweg 03 starts from the vicinity of Obstansersee hut. While the exact trailhead parking details are not provided, access points for the Südalpenweg 03 often involve mountain roads or public transport connections to alpine huts. It's recommended to research specific parking options or public transport routes to the Obstansersee area before your trip.
No, this route is classified as difficult and requires surefootedness, a head for heights, and good physical condition. It is not recommended for beginners or families with young children due to its challenging alpine characteristics, exposed sections, and rocky summit ridge.
Yes, the route starts near the Obstansersee hut, which offers a convenient place to stay before or after your hike. Along the broader Südalpenweg 03, there are various alpine huts that provide accommodation and refreshments, but specific options directly on this segment beyond Obstansersee hut would require further research.
The summit of Hollbrucker Spitze features a short, rocky ridge that demands surefootedness. Be prepared for potentially exposed sections. In early season or after snowfall, ice buildup and cornices can occur, significantly increasing the challenge. Always wear appropriate hiking boots, carry sufficient water and layers, and consider trekking poles. If you are less proficient in alpine terrain, extra caution or even avoiding the summit in adverse conditions is advised.
The last panoramic trail on my tour. I have a lot of time to get to the Sillianer Hut, so I change the tour a bit and take on 3 more peaks. Climb to the Obstanser Saddle, WOW😍what a view of the Sexten Dolomites, this view accompanies me to the hut. At the saddle I say goodbye to Matthias & Bernd, we walked together for a few days. The trail leads to the Eisenreich at 2,665m, once again past countless positions from the First World War and then to the Hollbrucker Cross at 2,581m. Bright sunshine and still this great panorama🫠what a final tour. 👌I also take the Hornisch-Eck at 2,552m with me before I move into my last night's camp in the Sillianer Hütte at 2,447m and treat myself to a piece of cake and a coffee while enjoying the dream view 👌🫶 There is a bit of sadness in the air, because after 11 days I am leaving this great path, thank you KHW 403 🫶 great people, nature & hospitality❤️❤️❤️
After a good breakfast buffet and admiring views of the 3 Zinnen, we started just before 8 a.m. Despite the fog coming up again and again, the views were beautiful, as my photos will hopefully prove. We even think we saw the 3 Zinnen hut in the middle of the Dolomites (can you find the photo?). In between there are always positions or military cemeteries from the 1st World War. After various summits we were already at the hut at around 2.30 p.m. Weather-wise, I found it comfortable to hike with my shirt and a windbreaker. It stayed dry.
A very beautiful and strenuous tour from the Leckfeldalm via the Sillian Hut to the Obstansersee Hut. Before you reach the Sillian Hut, you are presented with a fantastic and breathtaking view of the Dolomites at the Leckfelder Sattel. You can see accommodation from the First World War. These remnants of this war will accompany us throughout the tour. Just like the military cemetery on this tour. The lake near the Obstansersee Hut invites you to take a swim in the cool lake after a strenuous tour.
