Hiking
Embark on the Sassi di Roccamalatina Trail from Pieve di Trebbio, a moderate hike spanning 5.0 miles (8.0 km) with 955 feet (291 metres) of elevation gain. This route takes about 2 hours and 28 minutes to complete, leading you through ancient paths. You'll wind through green forests and enjoy wide views of the Panaro valley. Keep an eye out for the distinctive "sassi," three rocky peaks that define the landscape. The trail also features a stone arch bridge and natural springs like the Sorgente della Pira, where water bubbles from old stone walls.
Your hike begins at Pieve di Trebbio, a historic starting point. You can find free parking conveniently located near the Pieve. This area also hosts the Il Fontanazzo visitor center, which offers helpful information about the park and the trail. Plan to arrive early on weekends to secure a spot, especially during peak seasons, to make the most of your visit.
The Sassi di Roccamalatina are unique sandstone spires that have formed over millions of years, creating a dramatic backdrop for your adventure. These geological formations are not just scenic; they also provide nesting sites for peregrine falcons, adding a wildlife element to your experience. The route passes by Sant'Apollonia, offering a viewpoint of the Sassi's western face, and the historic Mulino della Riva, an ancient mill with its original grinding stone and a pleasant picnic area.

PEC (Central Emilia Parks) - The Sassi Ring (Itinerary No. 3) Taken from the Central Emilia Parks tourist website The route: "Il Fontanazzo" Park Center (Parking) - La Vigna - La Cà - Le Serre - Castellaro - Rocca di Sopra - Borgo dei Sassi di Roccamalatina Visitor Center - Carbonaia - Riva Spring - Riva Mill - Il Rio - Santa Apollonia - Teggia - Siano - Serlo - Minighelli - Vallecchie Mill - Sulphurous Water Spring - Isola - Cà Rastelli - "Il Fontanazzo" Park Center (Parking) Actual tour details: Duration: 4:37 Distance: 9.15 km Elevation gain: 350 m The photos are not in sequential order because the recorded itinerary was accidentally interrupted halfway. These were recreated on paper and added later. The navigation data was obtained from two field recordings. A very beautiful loop within the Sassi di Roccamalatina Regional Park, perfectly signposted. There is a fee to climb Sasso della Croce, and I didn't do it, partly because the overcast and foggy sky limited the view of the valley. The view is still beautiful even without climbing it. Info and details: https://itinerari.parchiemiliacentrale.it/track/137
The ring can be done in full only that I have turned on the track from the restaurant "the lighthouse". You can find the complete itinerary on the site of the Parco dei Sassi di Rocca Malatina
Nice walk in the Sassi di Rocca Malatina park. Extraordinary view, even more so on a beautiful December day with the snow-capped Cimone in the background. I recommend Trattoria Sant'Apollonia... always a guarantee!!👣
The Sassi di Roccamalatina are large rocky spires of sandstone that rise and stand out from the surrounding hilly landscape. They are part of a much larger park full of paths that develops in the lower Modena Apennines, in very little urbanized areas. A good part of the path is in the woods and at this time offers very fragrant acacia and elderberry blooms. Unfortunately the entrance was closed and is limited to weekends only as indicated at the entrance and the cost is €3.50.
Circular route number 3 through the Parco Regionale dei Sassi di Roccamalatina⛰️👍
