Calà del Sasso – The 4,444 Steps Trail from Valstagna

It is the longest stairway in Italy and one of the longest in Europe open to the public. It was built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in the 14th century, and then widely used by the Venetians until the 18th century. At the time of the Serenissima Republic, cut tree trunks (hence the name Calà) were brought down in the woods of Sasso di Asiago up to Valstagna, to then be loaded onto rafts and transported along the Brenta River. In 1999 a cyclist rode it uphill without ever getting off his bike or putting a foot on the ground! The difference in altitude ranges from 20 to 40% and it is a short but demanding route that can be suitable for everyone because it is never exposed, but the walking time varies according to the legs and breath. I preferred to go there and back from the same route because I didn't want to do parts of asphalt in the sun, whereas this route is always in the woods, therefore shady.
