Former Austro-Hungarian Cemetery of Vanzi-Molini WW1

Highlight • Historical Site

The Laghi basin, at the foot of Mount Maggio and Mount Majo, has always been a border area: first between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire; now between Veneto and Trentino. With the advance of the massive Strafexpedition of 1916, when the imperial troops attempted to invade the plain, the entire valley found itself just steps away from the enemy, and the inhabitants were forced into a mass exodus with just hours' notice. The basin, occupied by the Austrians until the end of the war, was heavily bombed by the Italians.

This small field cemetery, located on a terrace overlooking the Molini district, housed the remains of 48 Kaiserjaegers (Tyrolean imperial soldiers) until 1928, when they were later transferred to the Santissima Trinità cemetery in Schio. All the crosses are labeled 'Unbekannten Soldaten' (unknown soldiers), except for two bearing the names of Anton Burgmann and Vitus Hofer. The area was restored in 1994, with the erection of a black cross similar to the one seen in a 1919 photo.

Highlight • Monument

Triangular sign of the Great War, embedded in a rock face (Soglio Fruconotte) and adorned with the Tyrolean eagle and two edelweiss flowers. Inscription: «1916 / Hier haben Kaiserjäger vom 2. Regiment gekämpft» [1916 / Here fought the Kaiserjäger of the 2nd Regiment]

It is strange to find it so ambushed and hidden, along the wild Val Laghetto that climbs to Monte Maggio; but during the Strafexpedition of 1916, the basin of Laghi was occupied by the Austro-Hungarians, who made it an important logistical hub close to the front line: precisely at the beginning of this narrow and sheltered valley, at the time not so wooded, there were barracks and depots, a command post, a small field hospital, and even a narrow-gauge railway.

This ancient boundary stone, called 'Termine n. 20' as it was part of a series, was placed in 1853 by the Habsburg Monarchy to delimit its provinces of Tyrol and Veneto; from 1866, with the annexation of Veneto to Italy, it came to mark the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy.

Placed on an eminence to the side of the mule track that leads to Monte Maggio, it offers a beautiful and wide panorama of the Passo di Coe and the Alpe Cimbra on one side, and the Vicenza Prealps on the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty level and terrain like on the Monte Maggio WWI Trail?

Komoot rates this route as difficult due to its length and significant elevation gain of over 1200 meters. While much of the trail follows comfortable former military roads and easy grassy paths, there are sections with rocky outcrops and steep ascents, particularly near the summit. Hikers should be prepared for varied terrain, including narrower passages near steep slopes, though generally, there are no specific dangerous situations.

How long does it typically take to complete this hike?

Komoot estimates the full route duration at approximately 7 hours and 40 minutes, covering nearly 15 kilometers. However, typical hiking times for the Monte Maggio trail can range around 3 hours for a more direct ascent, depending on your pace and how much time you spend exploring the historical sites.

What historical sites and viewpoints can I expect to see along the route?

This trail is rich in history and offers stunning views. You'll encounter remnants of Italian trenches, especially around the summit, and a large cross commemorating WWI soldiers. Specific highlights include the Former Austro-Hungarian Cemetery of Vanzi-Molini WW1, an Austro-Hungarian plate WW1, and an Ancient Tirolo-Veneto Boundary Marker (1853). From the peak, enjoy majestic panoramic views of the Val di Terragnolo, the imposing Pasubio massif, and on clear days, even the Venetian plains.

Where can I park and access the trailhead for this route?

The Monte Maggio WWI Trail is accessible from Passo Coe. You can find parking facilities there, which serve as a convenient starting point for your hike.

Is this trail suitable for families or beginners?

Given Komoot's 'difficult' rating, significant elevation gain, and nearly 15 km distance, this specific route might be challenging for beginners or young children. While parts of the Monte Maggio area are considered easy to medium, this particular route includes an Ascent on Steep Slopes. Families with younger children or those new to hiking might prefer shorter, less strenuous sections of the broader Sentiero della Pace in the area.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The best time to hike the Monte Maggio WWI Trail is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October) when the weather is generally mild and the trails are clear of snow. Summer offers warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours, while spring and autumn provide pleasant conditions and beautiful foliage.

Is the Monte Maggio WWI Trail dog-friendly?

Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in this region, but it's always recommended to keep them on a leash, especially given the presence of wildlife and other hikers. Be prepared to carry out any waste. Ensure your dog is fit enough for a long and difficult hike with varied terrain.

Do I need any permits or pay entrance fees to hike this trail?

No, you do not typically need any permits or have to pay entrance fees to hike the Monte Maggio WWI Trail. Access to the trail and its historical sites is generally free and open to the public.

Does this route intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route passes through sections of the Sentiero della Pace, a larger historical trail. It also briefly touches upon the European long distance path E5 - Italy and the Vialetto di accesso al'ex cimitero di guerra.

What should I bring for a hike on this trail?

For this difficult and lengthy hike, you should bring plenty of water, snacks, appropriate hiking footwear, layers of clothing suitable for changing mountain weather, sun protection, and a first-aid kit. A map or GPS device (like the komoot app) is also recommended for navigation.

Are there any facilities like cafes or refuges near the trail?

While the trail itself is primarily natural and historical, you can find amenities like cafes and restaurants in nearby towns such as Tonezza del Cimone or Folgaria. It's advisable to check their operating hours before your hike, as there are no direct facilities on the trail itself.
