Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Pizzo Alto Summit Trail via Val Laner (Route 343) begin, and is there parking available?

The trail officially begins at the Fersental Trailhead Parking. This is where you can typically find parking to start your hike.

What is the difficulty level of the Pizzo Alto Summit Trail, and what should I expect?

Komoot rates this trail as difficult. While generally considered 'quite simple' (T-E, Turistico-Escursionistico) in terms of technicality, it is 'a bit tiring' due to sustained uphill sections and significant elevation gain. In snowy or icy conditions, especially in the final stretch towards the summit, the difficulty increases significantly, requiring specialized gear like crampons.

When is the best time to hike the Pizzo Alto Summit Trail?

The best time to hike this trail for a less technical experience is typically from late spring to early autumn. During winter or early spring, the presence of snow and ice can transform the hike into a more demanding, almost alpine experience, requiring specific equipment like crampons and greater attention to safety.

Are dogs allowed on the Pizzo Alto Summit Trail?

Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in the Lagorai mountain range, but they should always be kept on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or grazing animals. Please ensure your dog is well-behaved and capable of handling the trail's difficulty and terrain.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required to hike in the Lagorai mountain range?

As of now, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the trails in the Lagorai mountain range, including the Pizzo Alto Summit Trail. However, always check local regulations before your visit, as rules can change.

What kind of terrain will I encounter on the Pizzo Alto Summit Trail?

The trail starts on asphalt roads before transitioning to a path through Val Laner. You'll experience consistent uphill sections with good gradients. The path can be rocky and exposed, particularly during the Ascent towards Sasso Rotto and the Northern ascent of Sasso Rotto, leading to the summit ridge. Caution is advised due to potential exposure in some areas.

What are the main points of interest or scenic views along the route?

The route offers several highlights. You'll pass through the beautiful Val Laner with the Torrente Laner and its waterfall. The Sette Selle Refuge provides a potential stop. From the Pizzo Alto Summit (2264 m), you'll enjoy expansive panoramic views, including the wooded profile of Dosso di Costalta and glimpses of the Dolomite ridges in the background.

Does this trail intersect with any other well-known paths?

Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. Notable ones include sections of the Alta Via del Porfido - Tappa 3, TransLagorai - Tappa 1, and the European long distance path E5 - Italy. You may also encounter parts of the Alta Via del Porfido - Tappa 4 and TransLagorai - Tappa 1 variante Erdemolo.

Is there any accommodation or refuge along the trail?

Yes, the trail passes by the Sette Selle Refuge, which can serve as a resting point or a place for refreshments during your hike.

What should I pack for hiking the Pizzo Alto Summit Trail?

Given the trail's difficulty and sustained uphill sections, sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing, and sufficient water are essential. Depending on the season, consider bringing trekking poles for stability. If hiking in snowy or icy conditions, crampons and an ice axe would be necessary. Always carry a map, compass or GPS, and a first-aid kit.

Trail Reviews

Patrizia
May 15, 2022, Lago Erdemolo – Rifugio Sette Selle Itinerario ad anello da Palai en Bersntol - Palù del Fersina

Beautiful solo ride. Departure from the paid parking in Palù del Fersina. Ascent to the lake of Erdemolo, also found some snow. Descent towards the Sette Selle refuge with exposed sections and sections to be performed with great attention due to snow. Spectacular landscape, colors that ranged from green to blue to the white of the snow. Nice day even if a little windy with some threatening clouds on the horizon. To be redone in the summer

Nice circular tour following the high porphyry route on the Lagorai group. Too bad about the fog on the ridges which certainly prevented us from having a beautiful view. Tour without particular difficulties

Start at the Vrotten parking lot (day ticket 6 euros), past Lago di Erdemolo to Passo del Lago (2218 m). From there, continue over Monte del Lago (2327 m) to Forcella Cavé (2184 m). From there, continue to Forcella delle Conelle (2198 m). This is where the Sentiero Fratelli Giuliani trail to Sasso Rotto (2394 m) begins. There are signs that the trail is difficult. On the map, the "trail" is marked T5. But be careful, it has nothing to do with a trail. It's a climbing route over the south ridge with sections up to grade III and is often climbed with rope. Some sections are quite exposed and sometimes have bouldering characteristics. You often have to think carefully about how to tackle certain sections. This includes half splits, straddle steps, and buttresses. Some sections are also pushing. If I'd done more research beforehand, I would have also brought approach shoes. It wasn't always optimal with the hiking boots. But I enjoyed the climb, always a bit curious to see what else the trail had in store. At two points, I had to squeeze under or between the rocks. From Sasso Rotto, the trail leads to Cima di Sette Stelle (2396 m). The descent is marked T6, but in my opinion, it's closer to T5. Not nearly as challenging as the trail itself. We continued to Cima d'Ezze (2362 m). The final summit was Monte Slimber (2203 m).

The route is entirely on a well-marked and frequented path, a steady step is required due to some exposed points, especially in some passages (cima d'ezze - cima slimber) of the last stretch before the refuge. This last part can be skipped if desired, going directly down to the refuge.
