Sarantonio Trench (Great War)

Highlight • Historical Site

Long, remarkable and restored Italian trench from the Great War: it climbs zigzagging from the Sarantonio lake (it is in fact also identified as the 'Sarantonio Trench') until it crosses the Gazza–Rove military road (part of the 'Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi'), and continues with the military mule track that climbs to the Ristele pass. Together with the fortified works on the Gazza plateau and hill, around the Battisti Refuge, it was part of the third line of resistance to contain a possible Austro-Hungarian attack.
Now it crosses a thick forest, but at the time of the conflict the area was cleared and the view was clear.

November 4, 2023,Valle dell'Agno: Recoaro Mille > Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi
The Path of the Great Trees winds along the large and silent Montagnole plateau, at the foot of the imposing and overlying chain of the Three Crosses: a very suggestive and scenographic landscape, with the file rouge of majestic centuries-old trees, accompanied by information panels. A must for foliage!

Trekking in Recoaro Mille: on the trail of the giants of the Vicenza Prealps

Showing Translation

A very beautiful route suitable for everyone, with a minimum of training. Beautiful views of the peaks of the Piccole Dolomiti, as well as glimpses through the woods onto wide clearings where well-restored mountain huts are found, and these large solitary trees that tower into the sky.
A mix of sights, colors, and panoramas that is very rewarding.

Showing Translation

Departure from the artificial lake parking lot towards Recoaro Mille. Easy but long hike not suitable for people without training, we found cloudy weather that did not show the surrounding peaks. To be repeated later
