This trail is classified as difficult. It requires a good level of fitness and experience with mountain terrain. You'll encounter sections that are equipped with metal ropes, chains, and steps to assist over rocky and exposed areas, making it challenging yet rewarding.
The terrain is varied and adventurous, winding through the narrow valley carved by the Meria river. You'll navigate between gorge banks, encounter natural, unpaved, alpine, asphalt, and gravel sections, and cross the Meria stream multiple times. Be prepared for rocky parts and potentially wet feet.
The trail is rich with natural beauty, including numerous waterfalls, cascades, crystal-clear pools, and natural basins known as "marmitte dei giganti" (giant's kettles). You can also enjoy panoramic views of Lake Lecco and the impressive Grigna Settentrionale mountain, especially on the return path. Don't miss the Natural pool with waterfall in Grigna Meridionale and the Trail of the Meria River Pools.
The trail typically starts from the villages of Sonvico or Somana, located above Mandello del Lario. Specific parking information is best checked locally upon arrival, as designated parking areas can vary. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the region, the challenging nature of this specific route, with its equipped sections, rocky terrain, and numerous river crossings, might be difficult for some dogs. If you bring your dog, ensure they are fit, experienced with mountain trails, and kept on a leash for their safety and that of other hikers.
The trail is most enjoyable in the mid-seasons (spring and autumn) and late summer. During these times, the weather is generally milder, and the refreshing coolness of the valley's water features is a welcome relief. High water levels in spring might make river crossings more challenging.
The trail is located within the Grigne Special Protection Area. While there are typically no specific entrance fees or permits required for hiking the trail itself, it's always good practice to check for any local regulations or conservation guidelines that might be in place, especially regarding waste disposal and respecting wildlife.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notable sections include parts of the Sentiero del Fiume, Sentee del Tacc, and the historic Sentiero del Viandante (Mandello del Lario - Lierna). You might also encounter segments of the Somana / Santa Maria / Era and trails leading to Alpe di Era.
There are generally no refreshment points directly along the main trail, so it's crucial to bring sufficient food and water for your hike. The Alpe di Era offers a peaceful resting point, and you might find facilities in the starting villages of Sonvico or Somana.
Be prepared for numerous river crossings, potentially a dozen or more in some sections. These can be challenging, especially after heavy rain or during periods of high water, and there's a good chance of getting your feet wet. Appropriate waterproof footwear with good grip is highly recommended.
Yes, many routes for the Sentiero del Fiume Meria Trail are circular. A common loop often incorporates a return path that passes the historic Santa Maria Sopra Olcio Church and View over Lake Como, offering splendid views over Lake Como.
Uphill always along the river... Several river crossings, some passages for climbing (secured with chains). Lots of waterfalls and pools. Very beautiful. Downhill paved path, very beautiful but not so adventurous
Climb all via ferrata no children and dogs ... beautiful but challenging for us inexperienced ... Return from Era descent to a stone staircase but quiet
The river path (15b) that we took on the way there has several rather challenging sections on rocks with chains. Furthermore, in several places you have to cross the river. This route is not recommended after heavy rain. The return path, however, is simple and passable.
The climb via signpost 15a is wonderful only when it hasn't rained in the mountains, you walk over some very exposed climbs due to the river. But really fantastic to follow the river upstream. Backward via marker 15 simple alpine path Everything very well described
If you like places that are rarely visited, full of waterfalls and pools like the giants' potholes, very wild, where nature reigns supreme and the trail offers adrenaline-filled moments without being dangerous, on sultry days this is a route that deserves an A+....long live nature, please always respect it!
At Alpe d'Era along the initial stretch of the Sentiero del Fiume. The point where the Stiri bridge allows you to cross the Meria stream is suggestive. Rejoining the usual route through a steep path that comes out near the sanctuary of Santa Maria sopra Olcio. Alpe d'Era is always very pretty.
Moving time was more or less 5+ which could not register
The tour is tough for casual hikers. Some climbing experience or talent is required, particularly towards the end of the climb. The varied path along the intoxicatingly beautiful stream, which must be crossed many times, makes up for this. You can't go wrong with waterproof hiking boots. Swimwear is definitely recommended; the pools and small lagoons are very tempting!
