The species-rich Ems floodplains, historic Papenburg, and the diverse Aschendorfer Obermoor are just a few of the highlights on this wonderful circular tour through the northern Ems Valley. It starts at Aschendorf train station. First, you'll encounter the Ems River and then cycle through the glacial dune areas of the Borsumer Berge, Dreiberg, and Tunxdorfer Berge. Many idyllic rest areas in the shade of large trees and by quiet waters await you.

You should allow plenty of time in the former fen colony of Papenburg, as there are many historic buildings and ships along the main canal, as well as cozy places to stop for a bite to eat. Before returning to Aschendorf, the renaturalized Aschendorfer Obermoor with its moorland nature trail invites you to explore on foot.

Highlight • Structure

Always a highlight for the tech geeks among us. Usually, there's the opportunity to see large ships up close.

The Open-Air Maritime Museum in Papenburg consists of six replica ships located at various locations throughout the city. In addition to a tjalk, a spitzmutte, a kuff, and two schmacks, you'll also find the brig "Friederike von Papenburg." This is not only the city's landmark, but also houses Papenburg's tourist information office.

Von Velen Open-Air Museum, Papenburg

Highlight • Historical Site

On the relatively small site, you can get a vivid insight into the times of peat cutters. It's hard to imagine the conditions under which this work was carried out. A few small cottages with authentic furnishings provide insight into the humble living conditions of those days. Across the street, there's a small café with a separate restroom, which is missing from the museum grounds.

Aschendorfer Moor Trail

Highlight • Trail

The moor path is almost two kilometers long and leads through the nature reserve "Aschendorfer Obermoor / Wild Moor". On various boards you can inform yourself about the flora and fauna. Incidentally, the path is most beautiful between June and September, when the heath flowers.
