Hiking
The Ötscher is a real statement and a must-see for anyone hiking in Lower Austria. Anyone who has ever stood on top knows why it's called the "Matterhorn of the Mostviertel." The hike to its summit is challenging, but easily doable for sure-footed mountaineers.
The trail starts in Lackenhof and leads you through the forest, along the piste, and ever uphill. The first section of switchbacks is challenging, but the view improves with every meter of elevation. At the Riffelsattel, you're almost there: just a little further, and you'll reach the Ötscherschutzhaus, where you can take a short break.
From here on, things get spectacular: You hike leisurely across the meadowland toward the Hüttenkogel, then ascend over rocky ridges and a narrow passage called the "Weißes Mäuerl" (White Wall) directly to the summit ridge. A little later, you'll be standing at 1,893 meters: panoramic views all around, the Mostviertel region below you, and the Styrian mountains in front of you. Let it all sink in before you start the return journey along the same route.
