Hiking
On this tour, you'll hike along Slovenia's largest lake and Europe's largest dry lake: Cerkniško Jezero (Cerkniško Lake), which only has water periodically. During dry periods, it transforms into an agriculturally used grassland. You'll be hiking along the Drvošec Trail, an educational trail that winds through the pristine nature of Cerkniško Jezero. You'll enjoy breathtaking views of the lake time and time again.
The hike starts at the end of the village of Dolenje Jezero, where you can park your car in the parking lot. You'll then head out onto the Drvošec Trail, which has been recognized as the best themed trail in Slovenia. Here, follow the bird trail marker, starting at the Rešeto Marshes. Bring binoculars and take your time for extensive observation. 276 species of birds have been spotted here. This natural paradise is also home to countless mammals, butterflies, and amphibians.
Mostly through the forest, you'll hike along a promontory in the western part of Lake Cerknica. From the "Kuharca" and "Klejni vrh" viewing platforms, as well as from the 10-meter-high "Otočec" observation tower, you'll have a magnificent view of this karst phenomenon. The Drvošec Trail ends about 500 meters before the bridge outside the village of Otok. The trail hugs the lake before returning along the familiar route.

Cerkniško jezero (Cerknicka Lake) Magnificent nature, you can observe many birds - beautiful🙌. We actually wanted to go SUP paddling, but since there isn't enough water, we went hiking 🥾. Parking is free during the week! It is the largest lake in Slovenia and a periodic lake. This means it doesn't have water all year round, but it does regularly. Also known as a seepage lake, the water disappears into holes and caves on the lake's bottom and shores during the summer months. The lake is filled by rainwater and several rivers. Depending on the water level, Cerknicka Lake is the largest and also the smallest lake in Slovenia. It is also the largest lake of its kind in Europe. When the area is dry, the meadows are used as fields and are home to a rich fauna. In winter, the lake freezes over and is a popular place for ice skating.
