Road cycling

This loop connects two spectacular Alpine passes with the border crossing between Slovenia and Italy – perfect for an ambitious road bike day tour with a challenging athletic challenge and varied scenery. You start in the center of Kranjska Gora and immediately tackle the first climb: In 25 hairpin bends, the road winds up to the Vršič Pass at an altitude of 1,611 meters – surrounded by the mighty peaks of Mojstrovka and Prisojnik.

In summer, the Poštarski dom mountain hut awaits you at the top. The descent takes you rapidly into the Trenta Valley – with another 25 hairpin bends and a significantly steeper gradient. You cycle past the headwaters of the emerald-green Soča River and along Triglav National Park to Bovec. A break in one of the small cafés is worthwhile here before continuing via Log pod Mangartom up to the Predil Pass – the second major climb of the day.

At the top of the pass, you cross the Italian border and shortly afterwards reach the deep blue Lago del Predil. The descent continues towards Tarvisio before reaching Slovenian soil again at Rateče. The return to Kranjska Gora follows the well-maintained cycle path – with minimal gradients and maximum views.

At the foot of the Vršič Pass, you find yourself in the idyllic Trenta Valley. The valley is divided into the five side valleys of Zadnjica, Lepena, Spodnja Trenta, Zadnja Trenta, and Zgornja Trenta. Today, it is only inhabited by a few people, but is a true natural gem.

View into the Bovec valley basin

Highlight • Viewpoint

Before or after driving through the narrow valleys of Triglav National Park, the landscape around Bovec opens up noticeably. The valley floor is very wide here, allowing more space for the Soča River. From the elevated position, you'll always have a fantastic view of the valley floor.

Predil Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Predil pass is located at 1,156 meters above sea level on the border between Italy and Slovenia. Until 1918 it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. After the First World War it was Italian territory, until 1947 when it became part of Yugoslavia. Since 1991, it has been the official border between Slovenia and Italy. From here, you can admire a breathtaking panorama of the Julian Alps.

On the second ascent in the cobblestone curves, you can overlook it, because otherwise the tour is so great

Beautiful day and ride with Leonardo...100,000 photos would not be enough to describe the beauty of the landscape

Showing Translation

The very tiring tour, which offers spectacular landscapes, especially in the Trenta valley, going up the Isonzo.
However, I do not recommend doing it like us on Saturday, because it is infested with motorcyclists.

Better to drive clockwise... then you have Vrsic cobblestones in the driveway

Great three-country day tour Austria, Italy, Slovenia 😀Unfortunately the weather didn't play along, but in the end you are completely satisfied 🤗

Classic tour! Reminds me a bit of a tour in France in the Chablaisse region: From the Col de Bassachaux, you can see Lac des Plagnes, which I also visited afterwards.
It was the same with the Mangrt: From above, I saw the Weissenfels Lakes (Laghi di Fusine) in Italy, which I also visited afterwards.
From the front: The climb …
