Hiking

Taking you from the mountain village of Parpan up to the 2,861-metre (9,386 ft) Rothorn, this panoramic alpine ridge hike requires solid fitness, surefootedness and some mountain experience. The rewards are fantastic views and, at the end, descent is taken care of thanks to the cable car.

You’ll start in the centre of Parpan, at around 1,500 metres (4,900 ft), which can be easily reached by bus or car, with spaces for the latter. You’ll hike across the beautiful plateaus of Oberberg to the Jochalp Mountain Restaurant, with its breathtaking view of Chur, Switzerland’s oldest town.

From here, the route continues to ascend past alpine meadows and over stretches of rugged ridge that require surefootedness. With sensational views of the vast mountain arena and down to Heidsee near Lenzerheide, you’ll make for the summit of the Parpaner Rothorn, adorned by a panoramic restaurant. It’s very much the hike’s crowning glory.

Churer Joch

Highlight • Viewpoint

At the Churer Joch, at an altitude of around 2,000 meters, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the valley all the way to Chur and, of course, the peaks behind you. There's also a mountain restaurant, the Jochalp. It will be open Tuesday to Sunday in summer 2025, starting July 9. It's the last place to stop for refreshments on the way toward the Parpaner Schwarzhorn or Rothorn, so if it's open, sit down, enjoy the view, and take a break.

Parpaner Rothorn Summit

Highlight • Summit

There are two ways to reach the Parpaner Rothorn: either by taking the cable car or by embarking on a challenging and strenuous hike. If you choose the latter option, you'll need sturdy footwear. Surefootedness and a head for heights are also beneficial on the ascent, ensuring you reach the summit safely. Next to the cable car station, there's also a panoramic restaurant where you can recharge with fine dining after a strenuous hike.
