Hiking

The second-highest peak in the Black Forest after the Feldberg and its subsidiary peaks, the Herzogenhorn is far less well-known than its neighboring mountain opposite, and therefore considerably quieter. The view, however, is almost even more impressive: From here, the view sweeps across the Feldberg, and on a clear day, you can see the Alpine peaks all the way to Mont Blanc, as well as the highest peaks of the Vosges Mountains beyond the Rhine Valley.

This loop from Menzenschwand is challenging, but still manageable for a mountain hike. From the starting point at the Mösle parking lot, you hike through the idyllic Krunkelbach Valley until you turn around at the Kriegsbach stream and ascend to the Krunkelbach Saddle. From here, you enter the mountains of the High Black Forest with their expansive alpine meadows and magnificent views.

After two more short but steep sections, you reach the 1,415-meter-high summit of the Herzogenhorn and can enjoy a well-deserved break with a panoramic view. On the descent, you'll pass another, slightly lower peak, the Grafenmatt, before descending into the Alb Valley and reaching the town of Feldberg. The Menzenschwander Hut invites you to take a rest here.

Now you'll follow the Menzenschwander Alb downhill. Along the way, you'll pass several small waterfalls and the so-called Menzenschwander Kluse, where the stream carves its way through the terminal moraine of a former Feldberg glacier. If you have some time, a short detour to the impressive Menzenschwander Waterfalls is worthwhile before you return to your starting point in the valley floor.

Today I felt like the summit feeling again, so I went to the Herzogenhorn. Unfortunately the weather was worse than predicted yesterday. I have a love-hate relationship with this tour. I love the peace and quiet as it is not very busy, but I mentally curse the entire climb and hope that I can make it up without a stroke. …

It was finally somewhat dry, so today we headed for the Herzogenhorn. We parked in Menzenschwand (€6/day) and then climbed a flat path, then a fairly steep one. At the top, there were fantastic panoramic views, but also a surprising number of people. Then we returned to the Feldberg Pass, where we had cake at the Menzenschwand Hut. The way …

My stomach-legs-butt program today took me from Menzenschwand to the Herzogenhorn. There's also a bit of cardio training on two steep climbs.
There was already a good wind on the way, but then really strong gusts swept over the summit. That's why the part for the stomach 🥪🍅☕ only happened on the descent.
Always a comfortable tour, albeit mostly on …

With a long break on the summit, the total time was just under 5 hours. Extremely great view of the Swiss Alps! All in all, a nice and relaxed round trip!

I parked on the right side of the street above the bus parking lot. On the other hand, it costs € 10 parking fee for one day.

Very nice tour with Meet5. We started in Menzenschwand. All parking spaces there are now chargeable (6 euros). First we went to the Menzenschwander waterfalls. They're short, but really worth it. Continue on a narrow path and on a wider path towards Feldberg. There was actually still skiing going on there. We didn't necessarily expect that. We quickly worked our …

The starting point was the pass on the Feldberg. From there, the hike climbed to the Grafenmatt summit (1377 m). Continued toward Bernau and the high moor. From there, the hike continued toward Menzenschwand and the waterfall there. It was a beautiful valley trail through meadows and paths, with small waterfalls along the way. We took a short break and …
