Road cycling

A beautiful route around the Fanad and Rossguill peninsulas, where you’ll ride along rugged coastline, past golden sandy beaches and through untamed landscapes.

It’s a lumpy route but devoid of any sharp climbs and interspersed with flat sections to spin out the legs. There are a few refuel points, but we’d suggest carrying some snacks that can be enjoyed at any of the numerous stunning viewpoints, including Fanad Lighthouse.

Starting in Milford, you’ll hop onto the Eurovelo route 1 briefly before heading out to the coast road, where you’ll have views across to Inch Island, an important nature reserve. Following the coastline’s contours, you’ve the Atlantic and golden beaches on one side and a mosaic of lush green fields and wild landscapes on the other. A short climb grants you views over the golden sands of Ballymastocker Bay and its Blue Flag beach.

The charming village of Portsalon and its scenic stone harbour has a quintessential Irish pub, or continue to Fanad Lighthouse, perched on its rocky outcrop, for snacks with a view over the vast Atlantic.

A rolling, sinewy country road transports you to Harry Blaney Bridge that connects Fanad and Rossguill peninsulas. Rugged and wild landscapes surround you on the road around Rossguill peninsula, where you’ll pass the cosy vibes of the Singing Pub and the breathtaking views at its northern reaches and of Doagh Bay.

Returning inland, Na Dunaibh Downings town offers a couple of refuelling options before heading over the highest point of the route. A fabulous descent offers views over Mulroy Bay before heading back to Milford.

Fanad Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Head north east down the R247 and you will find the Fanad lighthouse which sits at the mouth of Lough Swilly and has been watching over since 1817.

In 1811 the HMS Saldanha sank and 254 people died, the only survivor was the captain's parrot. After this terrible tragedy the lighthouse was built and was first lit on St. Patrick's Day in 1817.

Harry Blaney Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Opened in May 2009, the bridge was constructed to reduce the travel time between the peninsulas of Fanad and Rossguill. The two peninsulas were previously connected by a ferry service, but this halted in the mid 1960s.

Rossguill Peninsula

Highlight • Natural

Lying between the peninsula of Fanad to the east and Horn head to the west, Rossguill is a beautiful mixture of heathland and ocean. With plenty of quiet beaches and hills to explore, the peninsula makes a great place to cycle and hike.
