Hiking
Starting out on the northern city limits, you’re quickly surrounded by dense forest on well-marked paths. The gradient of this mixed-terrain mountain trail is moderately steep for its entirety, so we’d recommend at least some hiking experience, as well as sturdy footwear and wet-weather gear.
Accompanied by the soothing sounds of nature, you’ll weave your way through beautiful forest, the character of which changes with the seasons. There are numerous species of birds to spot, as well as deer, wild boar and hares.
Just off the trail, around half way up, there’s the opportunity to visit the medieval Medvedgrad Fort, with 360-degree views from its rocky outcrop. It’s a worthwhile side excursion if time allows, although there is an entrance fee and do check opening times.
From Medvedgrad Fort, you’ll wind along the contours of the 869-metre (2,851 ft) high Veliki Plazur peak’s eastern slopes. It’s one of numerous peaks that contribute to the park’s stunning skyline.
There are some steeper gradients on natural surfaces to negotiate on this upper section of the trail, but it’s all worth the effort by the time you reach Tomislav’s hut. For those still with some energy in the legs, it’s just a short hike to Sljeme, the park’s dominating peak.
