Hiking
If you’re following the Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) as a thru-hike, one of its memorable features is the Båtluffarleden (island hopping) rowboats. They are located on the strait between Idholmen in Finnhamns Nature Reserve and Kålgårdsöns Nature Reserve in Ingmarsö.
Even if you are not experienced with rowing, the crossing is a short distance of around 400 metres from shore to shore and makes for a fun change of pace.
To ensure there is always a rowboat on both sides of the strait, the system relies on shuttling.
First, row across to the other side to collect the second boat. Then, tow it back to the side you started from and leave it there. Finally, row back again in the first boat to continue your hike.
It’s a great way to sharpen your rowing technique — or simply enjoy the novelty!
Starting from Finnhamn row slightly south first, then west along the southern coast of Malins kobbe (a small island). Look out for the yellow/blue SAT marker on a small shoal, and beyond that on the shore of Ingmarsö, another SAT marker and an information board.
From Ingmarsö, row east toward the small shoal with the yellow/blue SAT marker. From there, follow the southern coast of Malins Kobbe island, which lies just north of you. As you round the island, the Finnhamn landing point comes into view.
If rowing isn’t for you, the North/South line ferry service operates in the summer season from Finnhamns ferry terminal at the northern tip of Stora Jolpan, arriving 15 minutes later at the terminal of Södra Ingmarsö. Be sure to check timetables carefully at: https://waxholmsbolaget.se/
The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
