Hiking

The Finnhamn section takes you across three islands: Idholmen, Stora Jolpan, and Lilla Jolpan, all of which are connected and collectively named Finnhamn.

On Lilla Jolpan, the trail hugs the coastline, offering near-constant sea views, with especially lovely outlooks on the southern end. The Stora Jolpan trail leads through meadows and woodland, opening out onto fantastic viewpoints at the south end of the island. Meanwhile, the Idholmen section is mostly along forest roads and paths, with a chance to unwind at the aptly named Paradisviken — a quiet bay perfect for swimming, various watersports, or simply soaking up the idyllic atmosphere.

In season, Finnhamn offers a good range of facilities, including a restaurant, rooftop bar, convenience store, and beach kiosk, where you can hire kayaks, rowboats, and SUPs. Accommodation includes a hostel, a holiday cottage village, and a campsite. Wild camping is permitted, but because Finnhamn lies within a nature reserve, additional local rules apply. Camp discreetly, respectfully, and leave no trace.

You can travel to Finnhamn from Åsättra on Ljusterö all year round, and from Stockholm City via Vaxholm. During the summer, Finnhamn is a stop on the North-South line, connecting many islands with more frequent sailings. Be sure to check timetables carefully.

If you’re continuing the SAT from Finnhamn, you can use “Båtluffarleden”, the island-hopping boats that you row across to Ingmarsö, forming a classic island-hopping adventure.

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience. This scenic viewpoint is very close to STF Finnhamns Vandrarhem. High up on the hill, it offers beautiful views of the surrounding archipelago. Very close-by there is a fire-pit and picnic benches.

View of Jolpsundet Bay

Highlight • Viewpoint

A nice view over the peaceful bay of Jolpsundet toward the (interconnected and accessible) island of Stora Jolpan.

Paradisviken Beach

Highlight • Beach

"Paradisviken" translates to Paradise Bay, a fitting name for such an idyllic spot.

The beach provides a family-friendly area for sunbathing and the sheltered calm waters are ideal for swimming. The surrounding area includes rocky outcrops and forest, so there is plenty to explore if the beach life gets too relaxing.

Directly on the beach is a classic beachside kiosk called "Ragnar's". Along with refreshments, you can hire kayaks, rowboats and SUPs from here.

The rowboats are an unusual feature for those hiking the SAT.

On each side of the strait between Finnhamn and Ingmarsö a rowboat is provided courtesy of the Archipelago Foundation.

To ensure that there is always a rowboat on each side, you must row back and forth three times: once to fetch the other rowboat, once to tow it back to the side you came from (you must leave it there), and once more to row back and continue your hike.

Don't take the boats out for a longer excursion, as you may leave someone stranded on the other island!
