The Lunga Via delle Dolomiti is a cycling excursion that takes you through one of the most iconic landscapes in the entire Alpine region, the Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park. The proposed route starts from the Cimabanche Pass, which you can reach by bus from Belluno via Cortina d'Ampezzo.

The route follows the former Dolomites railway line entirely, so you'll encounter a series of characteristic structures, such as stations, tunnels, and bridges. The first section passes through dense coniferous forests and flanks precious natural sites such as the Bianco and Nero lakes. In Ospitale, you pass a small 13th-century church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, protector of wayfarers.

Once you reach bustling Cortina d'Ampezzo, you avoid the city center, continuing through a residential area of hotels and stately homes. The route now runs alongside the Boite stream towards San Vito di Cadore, from where the view opens up to the peaks of Mounts Antelao and Pelmo. New bridges and old tunnels ensure safety through Vodo, Venas, Valle, and Tai.

In Pieve di Cadore, we recommend a stop to visit Titian's house and other historical sites and museums. The route ends in Calalzo di Cadore, where, after a delicious aperitivo or gelato, you can take the train to the nearest city, Belluno.

Lake de Rufiedo

Highlight • Lake

A naturalistic oasis close to the Cimabanche pass, the Rufiedo lake is perfect for a break while you ride the Dolomites cycle path. It is located at the foot of the Croda Rossa, a mountain from which it collects part of the melted snow.

Wilde Guesthouse (Old Customs House)

Highlight • Historical Site

The railway that connected Cortina d'Ampezzo and Pieve di Cadore was born in 1916, for war reasons. In 1964 the entire railway was dismantled, but the old customs house is still present.

From here begins a fun gravel section.

From the Boite Valley, the view of the mountains surrounding San Vito di Cadore is spectacular. The Dolomite peaks such as Antelao and Pelmo rise majestically, creating a unique panorama, with their steep walls and jagged peaks that seem to touch the sky, creating an atmosphere of peace and grandeur.

Today it is 68 km and 740 meters in altitude. We start in Toblach but it wasn't until I reached Dürensee that I realized that I hadn't started the recording. The route went through a breathtaking landscape in wonderfully beautiful weather. Due to the landscape, the route wasn't paved all the way through, but you do need a bit of …

Started in cool temperatures, at 1650 m above sea level, the Dolomites could not be seen behind the clouds at first. In the afternoon the sun 🌞 finally came out. The tour is only downhill. The first kilometers, until just before Cortina d'Ampezzo, are gravel, but passable.
