Cycling

Anyone embarking on a bike tour is eager to get going and cover some distance. Therefore, it's advisable to slow down a bit from the start so you don't miss the charming old town of Schaffhausen and the sight of the rushing waters at the Rhine Falls. With these impressions, you'll be highly motivated to start the first part of the tour, which will take you across rivers and through picturesque villages to Winterthur.

Once there, you'll find plenty of opportunities to pause for a refreshing drink and gather strength for the next 20 kilometers or so. The elevation profile up to the finish in Pfäffikon shows you that the route will now also be uphill. With every powerful pedal stroke, however, the view of the Zurich Oberland becomes more beautiful, and the gentle, green hills aren't too strenuous to ride.

Rhine Falls and Laufen Castle

Highlight • Waterfall

The breathtaking force of nature is impressive. I somehow pictured the Rhine in Western Europe, flowing into its riverbed and radiating energy, just like here at the Rhine Falls. What would Europe be without Father Rhine? And of course, there are such wonderful stretches for us cyclists that we all enjoy so much.

Rest Area on Henggarterweg

Highlight (Segment) • Rest Area

The cycle path runs along the old Schaffhauserstrasse – a very busy road in the 1980s and 1990s, which was closed after the construction of the Winterthur-Henggart section of the A4 motorway. It now runs partly through a nature reserve.

Winterthur City Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Town Hall, City Council Secretariat, Winterthur
The pride of Winterthur is the town hall built by Gottfried Semper on the edge of the old town. With the economic boom and the increasing population, the need for space for administration, art, music and higher education arose. In 1863, it was decided to build a town hall.
The Winterthur town hall, built between 1865 and 1869 by Gottfried Semper (1803–79), is one of the most outstanding works of historicism and, together with the Semper Opera in Dresden and the ETH main building in Zurich, is one of the great architect's most important buildings. In 1930, the building was extended by two window axes by the architect Leberecht Völki. The new building was intended to present and also fit into the neighborhood of the adjacent buildings of the Boys' Museum (now the Oskar Reinhart Museum at the Stadtgarten) and the old town schoolhouse. The monumental sandstone building with the enormous open staircase was built in the classicist style. On October 30, 1870, the first citizens' meeting took place in the community hall (now the concert hall).

The lakeside promenade on Lake Pfäffikersee is a great place to relax. There is a large lawn for sunbathing and there are also places to eat and drink.
