Mountain biking

A scenic tour that rewards the strenuous climb up Balmberg with a breathtaking panorama across the Swiss Plateau to the Alps. It's doable on a mountain or gravel bike, and is especially worthwhile when visibility is good.

With the slightly thicker tires, you'll roll from the train station across the Aare River, warming up your calves and thighs on a pleasant gradient. Forests, meadows, and gravel paths lead you to the Balm ruins, where the steep climb to the pass begins. Reaching over 1,000 meters, the most enjoyable part of the tour begins. A high-altitude trail crosses the entire Weissenstein chain to the Hinter-Weissenstein Inn.

You can take a break here with a beautiful view before starting the descent. Winding and steep forest and hiking trails lead you into the Chlus valley – more challenging on a gravel bike than on a mountain bike – before the route becomes more relaxed again from Oberdorf.

The Balmfluh castle ruins are clearly visible from the trail. It's worth getting off your bike for a moment and taking a look at the old walls.

Balmberg Pass Summit

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Balmberg is particularly notorious for its extremely steep approach from Welschenrohr. There, the asphalt climb climbs approximately 400 meters with gradients of up to 25%. From Günsberg, it's considerably easier – in comparison – but still a real fitness test!

Schofgraben Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A beautiful trail from Balmberg up to Weissenstein. Gravel at first, then solid rocks. There's gravel in some places, but it's still rideable.

A flowing gravel trail connecting the Vorder- and Hinter Weissenstein. Beautiful views of the Alps are guaranteed. Beware of hikers along the way.

Chlusgraben Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Steep climb, beautiful scenery. However, the rain has taken its toll on some parts of the trail, and there's quite a bit of gravel along the way. Don't go too fast on the downhill, as the steep terrain can be dangerous in the sharp turns.
