A circular trail that focuses on fine regional produce: that's what the Brot- und Morendenweg (Bread and Morenden Trail) in the Lesach Valley promises. At a good twelve kilometers long and with approximately 400 meters of ascent and descent, it's ideal for families with children who can already hike independently…

Our tour begins directly in Liesing, a small, picturesque town in the Lesach Valley. Here, everything is quieter and more authentic than in the more popular tourist centers. We immediately feel welcome – without artificial entertainment, but with genuine hospitality. From the hotel, we descend into the valley and upstream along the banks of the Gail River. The river rushes unspoiled and wild through the landscape. The path to Obergail leads us first through dense forest, then across open meadows with sweeping views over the Lesach Valley. The old farmhouses are particularly impressive, as if time has stood still here. On the bee educational trail, we learn fascinating facts about the life of bees after taking our first culinary break at the Mühlenstüberl (mill pub). For those with a sweet tooth, the Stockplattln (traditional pastry with doughnuts), layered with poppy seeds, dried fruits, and honey, are a highlight. We also learn what constitutes a typical Morende (traditional snack) – the Lesach Valley's traditional snack with bread, cheese, bacon, or Schlipfkrapfen (a kind of doughnut). This isn't about trends, but about living traditions that have been preserved to this day. We reach the Steinecken Hut via a forest path. From here, a magnificent view of Liesing and Obergail opens up. A team of horses at the hut immediately catches the attention of Franzi and our junior, making the break an experience. We then continue along the wide forest road – we'll remember the alternative path directly down to the Gail for next time. From the banks of the Gail River back to Liesing, we take the hiking trail that offers another stunning view of the steep meadows above the river valley – especially in the light of the low late afternoon sun. We linger and enjoy the peace and quiet before walking the last few meters to the village. There, we round off the day with Carinthian Schlipfkrapfen (a kind of fried doughnut) in four vegetarian versions. A delight that perfectly rounds off the character of this hike: nature, tradition, tranquility, and regional cuisine.
Beautiful tour Start and finish in Obergail at the Alpenhotel Wanderniki
WOW! Magnificent Lesach Valley! Even though the climb was tough in 30-degree heat, the views and stunning scenery were worth every breath. You do need some fitness, but the trails are generally easy to walk. Great views and delicious, inexpensive food! Cyclists at the newly renovated Steineckalm. Delicious Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancakes) at the mill! Definitely worth trying!
Easy trail with plenty of rest and refreshment stops.
The "Culinary Enjoyment Tour"🍞🍳🥮🥛🍯: The path turned out well today as an introductory round with little altitude. The Lesachtaler bread production was declared an intangible UNESCO cultural heritage and "Morenden" was the motto when farming families got together and ate their traditional home-made dishes. When we visited the restaurant "Hofschenke Mühlenstüberl" we pressed "Pause" so that the 2.40 hours are pure hiking time. 🍯 Among other things, the dessert "Lesachtaler Stockplattlan" ended up in our stomach & also an "Alm-Dudler" refreshed our senses. 🐝 At the bee educational trail (🛖 with bee museum) there was a cupboard full of honey specialties. We paid a tip in addition to the purchase price and filled our backpack with "Lesachtaler 🐝-Honig", the schnapps 🍶 "Lesachtaler Bärenfang" and a lip balm 💄 for daily lip pleasure 😚...😉. Pfiat di
