Hiking

A cool experience for adventure seekers is the circular hike through the Groppenstein Gorge in Obervellach. Along wooden walkways and over bridges, you'll hike alongside the rushing, white Mallnitzbach stream to spectacular waterfalls up to 30 meters high and deep into the gorge, which is only a few meters wide in places. The finale is a magnificent view of a castle that is over 700 years old.

Sturdy footwear and surefootedness are required for this hike. If you're planning the tour as a family outing, the children should be old enough to hike independently and with a sense of risk. There is an entrance fee to visit the gorge. Information about this can be found here: https://www.groppensteinschlucht.at/.

Groppenstein Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

This waterfall is absolutely worth seeing, certainly one of the highlights in Austria. The rock structures have been thoroughly worn by the water, creating a unique image with smooth, shimmering stone surfaces.

Magnificent landscape, forces of nature that teach you respect. Not as crowded as the nearby Ragga Gorge, but at least as great.

Relatively easy hike up the gorge. At the top you can still go to the Himmelbauer, about an additional hour's walk from the end of the gorge. But be careful, Wednesday is closed there 🫤

The entrance to the Groppenstein Gorge was adorned with a sign saying "Closed today." Probably because of the forecast "storm" in the form of rain. But even this had stopped by now and so the Groppenstein Gorge was all ours.

Only three fire salamanders accompanied us on the way.

We had never seen so many in one day before.

The Groppestein Gorge is a natural wonder, located in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The 2.5 km long trail leads along spectacular walkways and bridges, admiring waterfalls up to 30 meters high. A unique experience, accompanied by the constant roar of the rapids and waterfalls. Recommended for everyone.

A super gorge with many walkways, bridges, and waterfalls. Stunning nature. Unfortunately, the Himmelbauer Inn was closed.

The route is about 5.5 km and about 280 meters in altitude, the GPS has straightened out a lot here. Very, very beautiful gorge, countless steps.

So... here we are again 🤣

I personally really liked this gorge. This time it was more about solid, rocky and rooted forest floor along the water.
Impressive waterfalls could be seen.
You could also take dogs here and this gorge is also easy to manage with small children.
At the end of the gorge we had to walk steeply …
