Experience the fascinating history of Bad Bertrich on this circular hiking trail - an adventure through the times of knights, robbers and Romans!
During the time of the knights, two brothers built the former Entersburg, which today is only evidenced by its spectacular location. In the 18th century, robbers launched their raids from the dense forests and valleys around the Üssbach. The Romans finally formed the place, which is now known as a health resort and bathing resort with the only Glauber's salt spa in Germany.
This circular hiking trail takes you along narrow paths and wide paths to fascinating places. A steep climb rewards you with the majestic view from the Steffenswarte on the Entersburg, built in the 19th century. Over almost 15 kilometers you will delve deep into the knight-robber-Roman stories of Bad Bertrich and experience them up close!
✨ Highlights of the tour:
⇨ 1.4 km Elven Grotto
⇨ 2.2 km Florianshütte
⇨ 3.0 Antoniusruh
⇨ 3.5 km Steffeswarte/Entersburg
🔎 Insider tip 🔎
Plan a detour to Wilhelmshöhe (behind the Florianshütte, approx. 0.4 km). A beautiful view of the Elbesbach valley awaits you there.

Great round trip in warm 25°C from Bad Bertrich. Lots of beautiful paths, some rocky, a few tough but not too long climbs. The elf or cheese grotto is a highlight, as is the tour itself. Just follow the sign (castle). Lots of parking in Bad B (all subject to a fee, €1/hour). Conclusion: Clear recommendation 👍
It goes through the wildly romantic Üssbachtal. We have this one The Knight-Robber-Römer adventure trail started at the RV parking space in Bad Bertrich. It first leads out of the small health resort and up to Entersburg, of which only the spectacular location remains today. It was once built by a pair of brothers during the knighthood. The Steffenswarte was built here in 1894 in honor of the “bathing inspector Steffens”. On the way back you pass the Elfengrotte and the Elbesbach waterfall - a scenery with a magical atmosphere. With only a few meters in altitude, this HeimatSpur ensures relaxed hiking fun.
Today, a short "hiking-strolling-walking tour"... The title "Knights-Robbers-Romans" promises a lot of history, but ultimately, it's a beautiful Üßbach tour. The reference to "knights" refers to the (unfortunately no longer accessible) Steffenswarte tower; this location on a small hill was the site of the Entersburg or Nantersburg, which was built and destroyed in the 11th century. The theme of robbers is another clear reference to the "Mosel Gang," which we already explained on the corresponding home trail - https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/2121240034 And the theme of Romans is certainly archaeologically interesting, as the Romans had already discovered and used the hot springs and (like the Celts before them) left traces at the "Entersburg." However, we enjoyed the murmuring, babbling, and sometimes slightly spraying stream in the beautiful Üßbachtal valley, and apart from a few encounters, we were practically alone there—no knights, no robbers, and no Romans either.... 🥾👍😊😍
A particularly beautiful tour always along the Üssbach. There are many highlights to explore, such as the Elfengrotte/Antoniusruh and the Entersburg. Particularly suitable with a dog in this heat!👍🐕🐕🦺
Wow...🧙♂️🍼👍👌... small and very fine... a really super beautiful tour... always along the Ueßbach... the Entersburg, the small Elbersbach waterfall and the Elfengrotte... What a great area... 👍👍👍👍👍👍 So, now I've worked up enough appetite, tomorrow comes the highlight...
As part of the Manderscheid Hiking Week, I was allowed to lead a group through the magical Üssbach Valley on this beautiful home trail. Highlights are, in addition to the beautiful landscape, the Antoniusruh, a special bench on the Üssbach, the Entersburg or Steffenswarte and the cheese or elf grotto. In the therapeutic landscape park, everyone can find peace and unwind
Since the first round didn't fully utilize our capacity.....we did the second tour immediately afterwards. Quite harmless climbs through forest paths, over bridges and co. The Maischquelle is worth a stop. Chilled drinks GG donation for the FFW Bad Bertrich.
This adventure trail started at the Vulkaneifel thermal baths. Also easy to do up to the elf grotto. Then we followed the marking with the castle sign. Some of the paths were sometimes a challenge. Hiking poles would certainly have been helpful in some places. Narrow paths, rocky and steep. We saved ourselves the trip to the Entersburg. High steps and very narrow. Since the announced thunderstorm then came up, we were able to stay in the Florianshütte. It rained cats and dogs. After the rain we moved on, but preferred to take the nearest paved road. In the last photos you can see how the beautiful waterfall became a raging waterfall or stream.
