Hiking
If you've always wanted to know more about volcanism, the Lava Trail is just the right tour for you. Over a good 20 kilometers you explore meadows, fields, forests and stream valleys - all peppered with evidence of the Eifel's unique volcanic history. And if you still have energy, you can extend the hike into a huge lava bomb. The lava bomb is only 500 meters away from the starting point of the circular hike, the Strohn volcano house.
In the center of Strohn you start by crossing the Alfbach and then hike in an arc over beautiful field paths. With the Trautzberger Maar you arrive at the smallest maar lake in the Eifel, which is soon followed by the beautiful Strohner Switzerland. For around 12,000 years, the Alfbach has washed a wildly romantic valley into the longest lava flow in the Eifel. The lava bed was created with the eruption of the Wartgesberg volcano, a presumably three-part cinder cone.
You cross the Alfbach again over a small bridge, walk past the idyllic monastery pond and over hilly terrain. The course of the Sammetbach takes you to the Holzmaar. From there it is not far to the Eifelstopp, a mobile snack bar that is only here on weekends and public holidays.
From now on it's all downhill back to Strohn. If you still have strength in your legs, it's worth taking another detour along the Alfbach to the largest lava bomb in the Eifel. The 120-ton and approximately six-meter-high colossus came loose from a quarry wall during blasting work in 1969. It is not yet clear whether this huge stone ball once flew through the air during a volcanic eruption or was caused by increased melting.

This route was planned by komoot.
Today it doesn't take long until I find myself in the magical world of a perfect autumn morning: I lose myself in the endlessly wide hilly landscape in which the small village of Strohn is embedded. The grass, bushes and trees along the way hold the raindrops of the last few days with their tips and branches. Cobwebs stretch between the branches like works of art, while the sun slowly gets warmer and warmer. When I've already been on the road for two hours and can still see my starting point in Strohn between the hills, I take a look at my outdoor watch. I loaded the Komoot route of the HeimatSpur Lavaweg onto the watch as a GPX track, and the watch then calculates in real time how long I will be on the road if I maintain the current speed: it shows a full 9 hours and 24 minutes for the remaining 18 kilometers. So slowly I started the day. But I just can't do anything else, stop again and again, admire the 360-degree view over the Eifel landscape and of course try to capture it somehow on photos and videos. It's not just the view into the distance that inspires me today. But also one or the other special feature along the way. For example, I walk past the Strohner Maar: a dry maar that is one of the last high moors in the Eifel. It is set in an autumn landscape in which every tone on the gamut from bright yellow to dark red appears, and almost no other. Later I stroll through steep lava walls that tower up to the treetops to the right and left of the Alfbach. This magical place is part of the longest lava flow in the Eifel. And he tells the story of an earlier volcanic eruption in which the lava poured down to the lowest point - where today water gurgles quietly.
With good weather, we decided to do the longest tour of the holiday today - over 20 km. The tour was very varied. There were phases with fields and meadows and beautiful forest passages through high beech forests. A dream when the sun shines in. But there were also some boring passages that went 1km straight ahead on a hiking highway. It should be emphasized that this tour has benches, benches, benches and also many dream loungers - we have discovered at least 5 well distributed. At about kilometer 6 we enjoyed the sun on a dream lounger. The only downer - a cup of coffee on the way would have been great. Unfortunately, we forgot a thermos with coffee. Otherwise a great and really exhausting tour. Now we look forward to relaxing in the sauna.
The Strohn Lava Trail is beautiful and varied. There are also dangerous passages in Strohn Switzerland. Unfortunately, there was constant fog on the route.
For the most part a very nice tour. Definitely sturdy shoes and surefootedness required. Short but steep paths and between km 16 - 18 the paths are currently still very soft. If you can't handle thorns and nettles, I recommend long trousers. Two places worth seeing weren't directly on the route, so I went there afterwards. From the start again in Rtg. "Hühnergruppe mit Bachlauf", then turn right onto the street "Zur Schweiz". Here you will first meet the real and fake "lava bomb" and after about 1 km you will encounter the solidified "lava flow".
A beautiful and challenging hike on the Heimatspur Lavaweg for my birthday today with dear running friends, ending in the Irish Pub in Gillenfeld 🍀
Enjoy autumn in all its colors - pure natural bathing! For today's mild autumn day we have chosen the HeimatSpur Lavaweg Strohn. The route was very varied, it went along meadows, fields, forests and stream valleys with beautiful views over the Vulkaneifel. We started at the church in Strohn. From there we first went to the dry maar of the Strahner Fairy Tales and then via country lanes to the Trautzberger Maar, the smallest volcanic lake in the Eifel. Through a beautiful beech forest we went towards Strohner Switzerland and the very wild and romantic Alfbachtal. The path continued along the Mückelner Klosterweiher and along forest paths through the Sammetbach valley before returning to the starting point along the Holzmaar.
Our hike starts at the Holzmaar hiking car park. First we followed the maare path towards Pulvermaar. Behind the powder maar, the maare path meets the lava path. We then followed this in the direction of Strohner Schweiz and Mückeln. We followed the lava path back to the Holzmaar. The paths are all excellently signposted. The first part of the hike leads over many fields. The view over the Eifel is partly fantastic. Finally, the descent to Alfbach (Strohner Schweiz) follows. Now the path also leads through shady forests. There is a wonderful resting place at the monastery pond. Walk along the Sammeltbach back to the Holzmaar.
7:30 am, the very first to arrive at the Holzmaar. At home, the fog was still thick, but here it was the finest ☀️. We walked along the Sammetbach towards Mückeln. For miles, we could hear birds chirping and the babbling of the stream, but absolutely nothing else 😊 Over the Klosterweiher, Sprink and Strohner Schweiz to the Vulkanhaus ☕️🍰🍺. Back at the Holzmaar, we took the fairy tale path at the Dürrenmaar.
