Hiking

Once a vital artery linking Amalfi to the inland hamlets, Via Maestra dei Villaggi is now an enchanting path that winds between suspended villages and provides breathtaking views. This route passes through the villages of Lone and Pastena, with a diversion to Pogerola, a picturesque hamlet perched in the mountains. To get here, we highly recommend public transport over driving: https://www.visitamalfi.info/en/getting-there/

With gentle climbs and a fair few steps to tackle, the route provides unforgettable views of the coast. You’ll walk among fragrant lemon groves and past ancient medieval houses with arched loggias and barrel vaults. Churches decorated with colourful majolica (tin-glazed earthenware), dry stone walls built with centuries of patience and terraces overlooking the blue Tyrrhenian Sea make this path a magnificently scenic and historic journey.

The landscape combines visages of natural beauty and human endeavour. Every curve tells of pilgrimage and ancient agriculture. In Pogerola, we suggest a visit to the historic centre and its churches.

To return to Amalfi, a gentle two-kilometre (1.2 mi) descent along Via Nuova (komoot.com/tour/2240140483) awaits. It's a walk immersed in greenery and the perfect way to end your journey.

Longfellow Walk

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Longfellow walk takes its name from the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who in 1875 celebrated Amalfi in a poem full of wonder and amazement. Having fallen in love with the city during his Grand Tour, he helped make it known overseas.

Lined with cypresses and pines that cling to the rocks, the walk offers glimpses of the port and the pine forest, where the greenery disappears into the horizon. It is a journey between nature and poetry, where every step seems to echo the verses of those who first captured its soul.

View of the Amalfi Harbor

Highlight • Viewpoint

Climbing up to the chapel of Santa Maria del Pino, the view opens onto spectacular views: the port of Amalfi, the coast that unfolds like a blue parchment, the sea that shines in the distance. The small church, with its minute arches and views that seem like suspended terraces, makes the atmosphere even more magical. Up here, it is truly a corner of timeless beauty.

The picturesque village of Lone is surrounded by lush gardens, terraces and religious buildings, such as the Church of the Nativity of Santa Maria Vergine. From here, a breathtaking view of the Amalfi Coast opens up, thanks to the village's vertical position: below, the Duoglio beach; above, Mount Scorca, which rises 550 meters above the sea.

The ancient name of the village, Leonum, could refer to a noble exponent of the rich merchant nobility of Amalfi.

View of Pogerola

Highlight • Viewpoint

Pogerola, perched on Mount Falconcello, is a hamlet of Amalfi with a curious name: it seems to derive from pigella, a terracotta plate used to bake bread.

Walking through its streets you will find traces of history, such as the church of Santa Marina Vergine, the remains of the Castrum Pigellulae with two surviving towers, and the church of San Michele Arcangelo, which silently watches over the village.
