Grenzlandtour – Radfahren in Sachsen-Anhalt

This moderate day tour takes you along the Elbe through the federal states of Brandenburg, Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The river used to mark part of the inner-German border between the GDR and the FRG. But where there used to be border posts and barbed wire fences, there are now fortunately beautiful cycle paths. The borderland tour combines history with impressive nature, here and there relics and monuments remind you of times gone by as you roam through the beautiful river landscape along the Elbe.

You start the tour in Wittenberge at the train station and should actually take a moment to enjoy the remarkable cityscape. The town hall and the city gate in particular are worth taking a closer look at. If you would rather really start pedaling, that's no problem either. Finally, your tour ends in Wittenberge, which gives you a second opportunity to explore the city in more detail.

As soon as you leave the city, you follow the Elbe on its northern bank, always along the dike. You pass the town of Cumlosen and shortly after Lütkenwisch you reach the ferry route to Lower Saxony. If the ferry is on the other bank and you don't want to wait, you can also take a short break in Lütkenwisch at Café Jaap on the cycle path. Normally it doesn't take too long for the ferry to return.

After a short stop at the observation tower near Schnackenburg, you reach the Stresow memorial site a little further south. The inner-German border used to run here and you get an impressive picture of how perfidious the former border system was at the time. From here you follow the Alland for a while before you meet the Elbe again near Wahrenberg, this time on its southern bank.

After a short ride on the dike, you cross the Elbe again south of Wittenberge. As an alternative to a final city tour, you can also visit the Old Oil Mill. The industrial monument is located directly on the river and offers everything you could wish for at the end of a bike tour: from a leisure center to a sauna area to a beach bar on the banks of the Elbe - just take a look and see what else there is to discover.
