Hiking

This tour takes you into the "Ebenauer Köpfe und Wisch" nature reserve. You can expect meadows rich in species, expansive views, and many small discoveries along the way. The ascent to the ridge is somewhat challenging in places, but overall the elevation gain remains manageable. Once you reach the top, the view opens up over Creuzburg and the Werra Valley.

Along the way, you'll find the Gottesackerkirche (Church of the Cemetery), which is now used as an exhibition space and is a good place for a short break. The tour concludes with a visit to Creuzburg Castle – a fitting end to a day of experiencing both nature and culture.

Well, I don't want to give too much away. And even though it's no longer used for religious purposes: you ABSOLUTELY MUST go in here. I have to say, the ideas that have been implemented there in such a sensational way completely blew me away. The paintings to the right and left of the altar alone are absolutely worth seeing. Just go in and be amazed!

Unlike many other castles in the Werra Valley and the Thuringian Forest, Creuzburg Castle is remarkably well-preserved. The lords of the castle recognized early on that the advent of firearms had rendered it obsolete as a strategically important fortress, and subsequently ceased using it as a military stronghold. For a time, the castle served as a court, prison, and administrative center.

After World War II, the castle, by then expanded into a palace, was occupied by the Red Army and used as their headquarters. In the early 1970s, the dilapidated building was handed over to the town of Creuzburg, but the castle had to be closed due to the risk of collapse. Renovation work finally began in the 1990s and was completed in 1997.

Today, you can visit the impressive castle complex, browse the castle museum, enjoy a meal in the restaurant, or stay overnight in style at the hotel. A large medieval festival also takes place every year at Pentecost.

Trail Reviews

Elli II. 👑 unterwegs

This hiking trail was exactly what I wanted! Historic walls, great views and beautiful flora and fauna. What more could you want?

While "TOP" isn't "premium," this is still a very nice and short loop that takes in Creuzburg's most beautiful spots. The section along the Werra River to the Ebenauer Köpfe, which was quite steep, was particularly new to me and offered a fantastic view of Creuzburg and the Werra at the end. I already knew the rest, like the "Wisch" viewpoint, from previous tours – but it's always beautiful.

The Christmas holidays are over, and so are my night shifts. Today we finally had time for ourselves, so we packed our backpacks this morning. We chose the top-rated Creuzburg hiking trail, rated 4 stars and featuring a special stamp. We were greeted by glorious sunshine ☀️ in Creuzburg, but thankfully no frost ❄️. We started at the free parking lot by the Werra bridge. After passing the horse pastures, a narrow, beautiful path leads steeply uphill through the nature reserve, which is secured by a gate and an electric fence on the left. The first stamp is located at the Eschenborn rest area.

😇🥾🌲🎅🏻A very beautiful hike in the Wartburg district😍🎅🏻🥾Dear hikers, have a wonderful second Advent!🎅🏻👍🌲

For hikers who have arrived by car, the tour begins in the free car park at the Werra Bridge. There is also an information point where you can find out more about the tour and the area. You walk along the Werra for the first kilometer before a rather demanding ascent awaits you, partly as a single trail, partly as a hiking trail. The first port of call is Stamp Point 28, Eschenborn. Until then, apart from an interesting view of Creuzburg, this part has nothing stunning to offer and somehow ripples along. At Eschenborn there is a brick barbecue next to the stamp hut. So if you happen to have a couple of raw Thuringian grilled sausages and, to top it all off, charcoal with you... Stamp point 2 on the tour, No. 90 Wisch, offers a perfect view of Creuzburg and the surrounding area. And if that's not high enough, you can scale the murderous 2m high lookout tower to broaden your horizons even more. Stamping point 3 is the Gottesackerkirche in Creuzburg. It has not been in operation for many years and is in surprisingly well-preserved condition. In April - October from Tuesday to Sunday it is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Finally, the last hiking stamp follows, number 29 in the parking lot at Creuzburg. The location reminded me a bit of a drive-in. You can almost get the stamp through the lowered window in the driver's door. As a welcome conclusion to this tour, the restaurant at the Creuzburg invites you. We did the tour with Komoot navigation, but it is so well signposted that it is not absolutely necessary.

Very nice and well signposted hike with some very nice viewpoints of the Werra Valley. There are many benches to relax and places to rest.
