Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to complete this hike?

This loop, covering approximately 15.6 kilometers, generally takes around 4 hours to complete. Keep in mind that walking on loose sand, especially on the dunes, can make it feel more strenuous and potentially extend your hiking time.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The terrain is quite varied, featuring sandy paths, some uneven surfaces, and gentle inclines as you ascend the dunes. You'll walk through lush forests, along the seashore, and across the unique shifting sands of the Lackawanna Dune. The soft sand can be tiring, but the diverse scenery makes it worthwhile.

Where is the best place to start this hike and is there parking available?

Access to the dunes, which are a central part of this loop, typically involves starting from the Rąbka entrance to Słowiński National Park. From there, you can choose to walk, cycle, or take an electric car for the initial several kilometers before reaching the dunes themselves. Parking facilities are usually available at the Rąbka entrance.

Are there any entrance fees or permits required for Słowiński National Park?

Yes, as this trail is located within Słowiński National Park, there are typically entrance fees required to access the park. It's advisable to check the official park website or at the Rąbka entrance for current fee information and any specific regulations.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

Regulations regarding dogs in Słowiński National Park can vary, especially in sensitive areas like the moving dunes. It's best to verify the current rules directly with the park authorities before bringing your dog, as restrictions may apply to protect wildlife and the natural environment.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

This route offers several unique sights. You'll experience the impressive Lackawanna Dune, which provides panoramic views of the Baltic Sea and Łebsko Lake. The trail also passes by the Rumbke Rocket Test Site, a historical landmark, and includes stretches along the beautiful Wydma Łącka Beach.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

To avoid large crowds and enjoy a more serene experience, visiting outside the peak summer months of June to August is recommended. Spring and early autumn offer pleasant temperatures and fewer visitors, making them ideal times to explore the shifting dunes and coastal scenery.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, this route incorporates sections of several official trails. You will be following the Szlak zielony for its entirety, and it also intersects with significant portions of the European long distance path E9 - part Poland and the Szlak Nadmorski Bałtycki.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter?

Słowiński National Park is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, home to diverse wildlife. While hiking, you might spot various bird species, especially near Łebsko Lake, as well as deer and wild boar in the forested areas. Remember to observe from a distance and respect their natural habitat.

Is this hike suitable for families with children?

While the trail is considered moderate due to walking on sand, its relatively flat elevation gain makes it accessible for families. However, the 15.6 km distance might be challenging for very young children. Consider the option of taking an electric car for the initial part from the Rąbka entrance to reduce the walking distance for little ones.

What should I pack for this hike?

Given the sandy terrain and coastal exposure, it's wise to pack sturdy hiking shoes (or sandals for the beach sections), plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing to adapt to changing weather conditions. Binoculars can enhance wildlife viewing, and a camera is a must for the panoramic dune views.

For the way there we recommend the electric taxi (approx. 5€ per person)... the path through the forest is quite nice...

The tour to the large shifting dune begins on the beach in Leba. Approx. 8km. After the descent, take the shuttle back. To the bus station and stop at the restaurant. The pierogi are highly recommended. Then through the forest on the beach back to Leba. The nature is breathtaking.

By electric bus from Łeba to Rąbki. Then through the forest to the final ramp (rocket test site from World War II). The main attraction of the park are the shifting dunes. Góra Łącka offers breathtaking views.

It was hard, but worth it. Returning against the wind all the time

The shifting dune is located in the Slowinski National Park. Very beautiful nature here. On the beach you can see very well how the trees fall from the dunes.

We parked the car in the car park in Rabka for 9ztl/h. The entrance to the national park costs 9ztl or 4.50ztl. Then we took the electric bus (18ztl/13.50ztl) further to the dune. You have to walk the remaining 2km anyway. We then walked along the sea back to the car park.

The shifting dune in the Polish national park "Słowiński Park Narodowy" is also called "Polish Sahara".

Absolutely worth seeing! It looks much more impressive than the pictures can show If you don't want to hike that far, you can take an electric taxi the 6 km to the start of the dunes.
