Amberg? Yes. Amberg! Why not? The expectation is to discover a pretty little town, to get a taste of the medieval flair that might arise while walking along the city walls and through the old town, to visit the Maria Hilf pilgrimage church on the – of course – Mariahilfberg, and hopefully, a good first impression. For children and young-at-heart adults, the route offers a fitness station right at the beginning, an ice cream parlor, playgrounds in the city moat, a drinking fountain up in front of the mountain church with several benches and tables under trees, the Stations of the Cross on the "descent" and, my highlight, the Air Museum for intrepid explorers, as well as many little gems. For architecture fans, the Church of St. Martin (Gothic), the Government Chancellery (Renaissance), and Maria Hilf (Baroque) should be of interest. To the southwest lies the impressive Nabburg Gate, Amberg's oldest city gate, unfortunately not on my route, which is a shame. I would have liked to have seen it later. Fans of Bauhaus architecture could also make a detour to a factory building by Walter Gropius, the Glaswerk. The Air Museum, with its photo booth and many other machines, was so much fun, though, that there wasn't much time left for the architecture anyway! Overall, the city, with the Vils River and its many newly planted green spaces, was beautifully landscaped. It wasn't overcrowded either. The old town offered many cafes, inns, and restaurants, so everyone was sure to find something to their liking. There are also supposed to be smaller breweries in Amberg; perhaps one of them also serves food? You'd have to check in advance. Finding a pub was totally unproblematic. I did two extra laps. I wasn't even cold. The pool was still empty. The weather held up; it was sunny, and it only clouded over when I got into the car. I think canoeing on the Vils River in the summer could also be a lot of fun... The first intrepid canoeists were already out and about.
