Altmühl-Jura Dino route

Cycling

This circular tour is like a short journey through time: impressive buildings from the Baroque period, medieval towns, traces of the Romans, and fossils from the Stone Age! The Jura hills, the Altmühl River, and the Main-Danube Canal offer a variety of trail conditions. You can also split the 75 kilometers into two stages.

Starting from Berching, your tour follows a flat path along the Main-Danube Canal, passing the Benedictine abbey of Plankstetten Monastery. After ten kilometers, you reach the Upper Bavarian town of Beilngries. The tour continues on the Altmühl Valley Cycle Path towards Eichstätt, where you pass the Kratzmühle bathing lake. The tour continues via Kinding to Kipfenberg, where you switch to the Limes Cycle Path towards Denkendorf. After Gelbelsee, you leave the Limes Cycle Path and cycle to the Altmühl Valley Dinosaur Museum. After Dietfurt an der Altmühl, the route continues on newly developed cycle paths. Cycle along the Laber River to Erbmühle, from where you follow the JurAktiv Tour to the Oening hill and then on to Berching.

You can also start your tour in Beilngries, at the Denkendorf Dinosaur Museum, or in Dietfurt.

Historic Old Town of Berching

Highlight • Historical Site

Berching was probably continuously inhabited since the Neolithic period. Market law has existed since 1245. Berching calls itself a “gem of the Middle Ages”. The well-preserved old town wall with four city gates and thirteen towers dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. The park areas beyond the impressive, medieval fortifications are beautifully laid out.

Worth seeing are the Chinese Tower, the Powder Tower and the Neumarkter Torturm, the historic town hall, the Zehntstadel, the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, the “Old Parish Church” of St. Lorenz in the suburb and the pilgrimage church of Maria Hilf on the southern outskirts of the city. The city is also known for its annual Rossmarkt, where politicians give pithy speeches.

Plankstetten Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Plankstetten Abbey, impressively situated on a slope in the Sulztal valley between Beilngries and Berching, is one of the most impressive and artistically valuable monastic complexes in the Altmühltal Nature Park and is considered a monument of national importance. The complex is not a museum, but the place of residence and work for a living Benedictine monastic community. The monastery tavern offers organic beer, brewed by the Riedenburger brewery, and delicious food. The organic shop and its associated wine cellar have everything to make a gourmet's heart beat faster.
