Ligne Maginot aquatique (boucle sud)

The southern loop of the aquatic Maginot Line offers an immersion in the heart of the Saarland's heritage, featuring military remains, industrial sites, and preserved natural spaces. While the start of this loop is in the village of Puttelange-aux-Lacs, it is possible to reach the route by train from Sarreguemines station.

From Puttelange-aux-Lacs, the route reaches the banks of the Welschof pond, one of the most beautiful on the Maginot Line. The route then runs alongside the small Saint-Hubert pond before arriving at Hambach, where the former Smart factory illustrates the region's industrial past.

From Sarreguemines, the route runs alongside the Sarre Coal Canal, once created to transport coal from the Saarbrücken deposit. It then reaches Sarralbe, which showcases local heritage with the Saint-Martin Church, nicknamed the "Cathedral of the Saarland," and the Musée du Pays d'Albe, which traces the history of the Aquatic Maginot Line. Before leaving the town, be sure to take a detour via the Porte d'Albe, the last vestige of the old fortifications.

The end of the route continues along a portion of the Eurovélo 5 route before branching west and heading back up towards the Hirbach pond. The route ends at the blockhouses of Rémering-lès-Puttelange before arriving at Puttelange-aux-Lacs, the terminus of this southern loop.
