This is a demanding full-day hike. Most hikers should plan for approximately 9-10 hours to complete the round trip, depending on their fitness level and chosen route.
The terrain varies significantly. You'll start through verdant forests and a broad river valley. As you gain elevation, it transitions to heathland, then rocky and boulder-strewn ground, with steep sections and scree towards the summit. Even in summer, you might encounter snowfields, requiring caution.
No, this trail is classified as a very challenging hike. It requires a good level of physical fitness and some mountain experience due to its length, significant elevation gain, and varied, often rugged terrain. It is not recommended for beginners.
There are two primary routes from Memurubu. The Raudhamran route is shorter (9 km one way) and steeper, offering early panoramic views. The Memurudalen route is longer (12 km one way) but features gentler terrain through the scenic Memurudalen Valley. Many hikers choose to ascend via Raudhamran and descend via Memurudalen for a diverse experience.
The trail offers magnificent scenery throughout. You'll experience expansive vistas of numerous 2000-meter peaks, the powerful glacial Muru River, and the dramatic Jotunheimen landscape. Near the summit, you'll find a historic stone hut (nødbu) built in 1889, and from the Surtningssue summit, the panoramic views across Jotunheimen National Park are breathtaking.
The trail starts from Memurubu Tourist Lodge. Memurubu is accessible by ferry across Gjende lake. It's advisable to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
The hiking season for To Surtningssue typically runs from June to September. Outside of these months, snow conditions can make the trail significantly more challenging or impassable.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in Jotunheimen National Park, but they must be kept on a leash from April 1st to October 31st. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and that you clean up after them.
There are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the To Surtningssue trail itself. However, you will need to pay for the ferry service to Memurubu if you choose that access method.
For a varied experience and to enjoy different perspectives, many hikers choose to ascend via the shorter, steeper Raudhamran route, which quickly offers expansive views. They then descend via the longer, gentler Memurudalen route, following the river through the valley. This creates a diverse round trip.
