Hello Komoot`ler, the old railway line https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahnstrecke_Rosheim%E2%80%93Saint-Nabor is an experience. Very nicely developed and lovingly designed. Small detours through the adjacent places are worthwhile.
Today we started right after breakfast. We had planned to do the train cycle path from Rosheim to Saint Nabor. First it was a few kilometers on perfect asphalt through fields with grandiose distant views over vineyards to the beealed mountains of the Vosges. It was easy to drive, it wasn't too hot yet. Arrived in Rosheim, the cycle path began immediately. About 11 km long. Top asphalt throughout. Overall it's pretty comfortable. Hardly any incline. There are hardly any old railway remnants left. Unfortunately, most of the buildings were demolished after the line, which was last used privately, was closed. Just a few meters of rails here and there. What a pity. Rosheim is a pretty town with three city gates, many beautiful colorful half-timbered houses and the impressive church of St. Peter and Paul. We looked around there and came back to the bike path at the end of the city. Everywhere pretty houses in relaxed construction. Fields, vineyards, hardly any industry. The old railway line was curvy. So does the bike path. It swings in wide arcs through the landscape. On the right you can see Mount Odile with the monastery on top. Below an old quarry from which the stones were taken away by train. Before Saint Nabor, the route climbs quite a bit and winds up the mountain. Until suddenly it's over. The cycle path ends abruptly in front of dense undergrowth. We didn't expect that. A bit puzzled, we turned and drove down a bit to Saint Nabor. In the meantime the sun was beating down from the sky again. The water was gone. We asked a woman about a supermarket. She said no and asked for our bottles to fill with ice cold water at her house. A very nice gesture and for me a proof that the Franco-German friendship works. In a good mood, we went steadily downhill to Obernai. 5 km determined we could thunder down. The heat that rose from the fields was made bearable by the headwind. Arrived in Obernai we could strengthen ourselves and admire the city. I had my cell phone in my pocket and the tour was gone. I recorded the way back to Dorlisheim separately, but I don't know if I'll post this part here. By the way, I fiddled around a bit at home. Lo and behold, here is the tour.
(The output is split into two parts because I messed with the Garmin) Today back in Alsace accompanied by my wife Maria. The goal is to spend a day in "outdoor wellness" mode, a concept of his invention and to which I willingly subscribe (yes, yes I promise :) To do this we chose to make a loop starting from Rosheim going up the magnificent greenway 'Le Chemin des Carrières' which follows the route of an old railway line. Starting from Rosheim, the greenway which leads to the old quarry of Saint-Nabor, winds for 11.5km in a magnificent landscape, between orchards, meadows and fields with Mont Sainte-Odile always in focus. It climbs regularly on a (very) gentle slope until the last 200m where. it straightens up considerably But this final effort is rewarded by the view offered by the extraordinary observation platform. Today, luck was with us, the Strasbourg cathedral was visible. From there we headed towards Obernai, first going down towards Bernardswiller. Fantastic sensation of feeling like sliding down these shared paths in the middle of the vineyard. We arrived in Obernai in the middle of the Spring Fair which enlivened the streets of the town. We strolled there before finding a terrace where it seemed obvious to order the first Ricard of the year to celebrate the sun and the sweetness :) Ricard which we accompanied with Portuguese tapas... and life is beautiful. Later, weighted down with a slice of cake and a Flat white, it was time to finish the loop and reach Rosheim from where we took different paths to return home. I decided to continue by bike :D
