This route was planned by komoot.
While specific parking areas aren't detailed, the Pukala Recreational Forest is generally accessible by car. Look for designated parking at the main trailheads within the forest. Public transport options to this specific trail are limited, so driving is usually the most convenient way to reach it.
Yes, the Pukala trail is rated as easy by komoot, making it suitable for beginners and families. While it does feature varied terrain with some elevation changes, the main circular route is clearly marked and can typically be completed in about two hours, offering an engaging yet manageable experience.
The trail offers diverse terrain, including high rocky hills and shady depressions with numerous elevation changes. You'll hike along the shores of the clear-watered Lake Pukalajärvi, enjoying views from rocky lakeside cliffs. The forest landscape is a mix of young pine-dominated areas and older forests, with fresh and dry heath forests, and lusher vegetation near streams.
Along the trail, you can enjoy the beautiful Pukala lake shore and cross the Iso-Musturi shore and bridge. There's also a Barbecue and Picnic Area on Rocky Island, Lake Pukala, perfect for a break. You might also spot ancient burial cairns (Lapinrauniot) on a hill northwest of the Ikkala hut, though they can be easily overlooked.
Yes, the route is part of the extensive trail network within the Pukala Recreational Forest. It primarily follows sections of the 'Pukalan kierros' trail and also includes parts of the 'Roninmaa' trail.
The Pukala trail is enjoyable in various seasons. Spring and autumn offer beautiful foliage and comfortable temperatures. Summer is great for enjoying the lake, but can be busier. Winter hiking is also possible, but be prepared for snow and ice, and check local conditions before you go.
Generally, dogs are welcome in Finnish recreational forests, including Pukala. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. Always clean up after your pet.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required to access the Pukala Recreational Forest or its trails. It's a public recreational area, freely accessible for hiking and other outdoor activities.
Yes, the Pukala Recreational Forest provides facilities for hikers. You'll find lean-to shelters and designated campfire sites, such as the Roninmaa lean-to shelter, which has a nearby island with a campfire site accessible via a bridge. Remember to bring your own firewood if you plan to make a fire.
The forests are home to diverse plant species, including various types of orchids and notable fungi like the waxcap mushroom. The area is also popular for berry and mushroom picking in season. While specific wildlife sightings vary, you can expect typical Finnish forest animals, birds, and insects.
The Pukala trail is primarily a circular route, meaning it's a loop trail. This allows you to experience different scenery without retracing your steps, bringing you back to your starting point.
Undoubtedly, everything on this hike is topped by today's real highlight, located exactly halfway along the trail and thus at its turning point: an incredibly romantic archipelago island in Lake Pukalajärvi, accessible via a small wooden bridge. You can choose where to light your barbecue: on the island or on the mainland side of the bridge at the Roninmaa rest area, where, in addition to firewood and a dry toilet, there's also a laavu. On a day like today, I'd prefer the latter, as the wind is almost impossible to escape on the island. I'd actually like to just sit here. I'm surrounded by pure harmony. But there are still another 3.5 kilometers through the thicket back to the starting point, the Siitinjärvi parking lot. A highly recommended hike! Have more? This supposedly short tour in the "recreation forest" was actually quite challenging. Without a backpack and equipped only with a little water, it was supposed to be a short walk, as we were already quite late. But the path literally went over hill and dale, up and down, beautiful, but exhausting and somehow you couldn't make any progress. As the weather was supposed to change, we finished the rest of the way on forest paths.
