A sensitive natural idyll in a rugged mountain landscape – Lake Wiegensee takes you right into the silent transformation of an ice-age landscape.

Info/Facts: From the cradle to the grave – the fate of Lake Wiegensee seems to be set in stone. As a relic of the ice age, it follows a natural transition: Old glacial lakes silt up over time, grow over from the edges, and eventually become bogs. This process takes millennia – and you can observe this impressively at Lake Wiegensee. In the heart of the Montafon Alps, you can see how quaking grasses slowly form and push the water back.

This special habitat is nestled in a rugged mountain landscape and offers a refuge for rare animal and plant species – including orchids, which form beautiful plant communities with the changing seasons. A place full of silent change – and full of life.

Protection and conservation: When you visit Lake Wiegensee, you are a guest in a particularly sensitive natural area. The area is a European protected area and is very sensitive to external influences – therefore, strict access rules apply, and you should take all trash back down to the valley. Thanks to the installed wooden walkway, you still have wonderful views and can experience the natural diversity without disturbing it – a worthwhile compensation for the sometimes strenuous approach.

Tips for the experience: The easiest way to reach Wiegensee is with the Tafamuntbahn cable car in Partenen, which is open in summer. From there, a 400-meter ascent takes you through rich mountain scenery with views of the Montafon valley. With a bit of luck, you might spot cotton grass along the way, see traces of the Alpine ptarmigan – or chamois feeding on the abundant flora on the slopes. Binoculars are almost always worthwhile!

Today we took the Tafamuntbahn cable car up again. From there, we went up to Wiegensee, a beautiful moorland lake. The trail initially led us along a root- and stone-covered path through the forest. Along the way, we were rewarded with magnificent views of the Silvretta High Alpine Road, Vermuntsee, and the Kops reservoir. The lake itself is very busy, …
