The most common starting point for the Måtind – Andøya hike is from Baugtua. While specific parking details aren't provided, it's generally understood that parking is available near this trailhead. It's always a good idea to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.
The Måtind – Andøya trail is generally classified as moderate. The initial ascent is quite steep, covering about 300 meters in altitude, which can be challenging. However, after this demanding start, the terrain largely flattens out, making it more manageable. It's suitable for individuals with good fitness and sure-footedness, and some sections are even considered suitable for a family outing after the initial climb.
The terrain is varied. It begins with a relatively steep ascent, followed by a flat plateau. You'll encounter marshy areas at the start, where wooden boards are sometimes present to help keep your feet dry, and rocky sections later on. The trail is often sparsely marked but usually visible.
The trail offers incredibly diverse and dramatic scenery. From the summit, you'll get panoramic views of white sand beaches like Høyvika and Otervika, crystal clear waters, and majestic mountains with steep cliffs. You can also spot unique sea stacks and rock formations, as well as the idyllic Bleik Island, a significant nesting ground for various bird species. Highlights along the way include the Twisted Birch Tree, Nonstinden Summit, and the Måtind Summit itself.
The best time to hike Måtind – Andøya is during the summer months. This period offers the unique experience of the midnight sun, casting warm light on the cliffs and beaches, and provides the most favorable weather conditions for hiking.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as you might encounter sheep in the area, it is crucial to keep your dog on a leash to ensure the safety of both your pet and the local wildlife.
No, there are no permits required or entrance fees to hike the Måtind – Andøya trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Nasjonal sykkelrute 1 (Bodø-Tromsø).
Yes, the gentle terrain on the plateau after the initial climb makes it a nice spot for wild camping, especially if you wish to experience camping under the midnight sun during the summer months.
The area is known for its rich birdlife, especially around Bleik Island, which is a significant nesting ground for species like puffins, razorbills, guillemots, cormorants, and eagles. You might also encounter sheep grazing in the wetlands and peatlands characteristic of Andøya.
The most common route for Måtind – Andøya from Baugtua is an out-and-back trail. You hike to the summit and return the same way. More challenging and exposed routes are available from Stave or Bleik for those seeking a longer or more strenuous hike, which might offer different configurations.
After two days of rain, today was finally going to be dry for half the day. Since we had already encountered a big bull moose on the road in the afternoon, we were hooked on moose sightings. So we set the alarm for 3:45 a.m. and went out on a photo safari at dusk without coffee 😩. We actually spotted the big bull moose again not far from the same spot. It was completely relaxed to photograph it from the car. In the next 90 minutes we then made a total of 12 (in words: TWELVE!) moose sightings. Amazing 🥳 Afterwards we finally had coffee in the hiking car park. So we set off at 7:00 a.m. for the summit hike on the Matind ⛰️. A really great hike. It's easy to walk, not so many rocks to climb over. The view is fantastic again. Strictly speaking, we saw the moose before the hike, but I'm so happy and that's why some of them are here.
A wonderful tour. A bit steep at the beginning, but otherwise very easy to walk. Not recommended when wet
Short hiking stop on the way to Lofoten. The goal was the Måtinden. The ascent was sporty, partly over loose rock up to over 300 meters. The weather changed quickly and there was stronger wind and clouds at the summit. So we decided to turn around. Nevertheless, great recordings could be made.
