Between Monschau and Sourbrodt, a cycle tour full of scenic contrasts and historical highlights unfolds for you. Sometimes through dense spruce forests, sometimes along the quiet Rur valley, and finally into the wide, mystical backdrop of the High Fens - each section of this route tells you its own story.

The historic Vennbahn serves as a companion along the way, where coal and steel trains once rolled. The smuggler village of Mützenich appears on the way, while the Reichenstein viaduct promises small adventures with its views.

Behind Kalterherberg, the heathland of the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park opens up, a raised bog with extraordinary charm. The way back takes you along the RurUfer cycle path, past the Reichenstein monastery and the Norbertus chapel, before Monschau beckons with its half-timbered houses and cozy alleys.

Reichenstein Viaduct on the Vennbahn

Highlight • Bridge

The viaduct at Reichenstein is an impressive structure! It doesn't matter whether you ride your bike on the Vennbahn above or below. The train used to be here, today it's cyclists and hikers.

Kalterherberg Railbike Station

Highlight • Cycleway

A completely different way to discover the High Fens!

Cycle comfortably through the idyllic High Fens with family, friends or colleagues. The route runs through the High Fens and is located on a former seven-kilometer-long section of rail between the Kalterherberg and Sourbrodt train stations. Visitors travel the route first in one direction and then in the opposite direction.

The journey takes around two hours. Halfway there, you can take a 20-minute break in the midst of the beautiful landscape. The dresines can accommodate up to four adults. At least two drivers are required to move around. The other passengers sit comfortably in a kind of deck chair. Child seats are available for small children (max. 20 kg) on request. There are also two dresines for wheelchair users.

The former Premonstratensian monastery from the 12th century is located in the harsh Eifel landscape, in the middle of the "Hohen Venn" nature park, directly on the German-Belgian border. The facility, which includes more than 32 hectares of forest and a fish pond, is located on a rocky plateau at the mouth of the Rur, which meanders in the valley between Kalterherberg and Eschweide.

Red House, Monschau

Highlight • Historical Site

How the Red House got its name, can be easily recognized by the facade color. The former headquarters of the Scheibler entrepreneurial family is now accessible as a museum and presents the living culture of the bourgeoisie around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

March 16, 2022,Vennradweg und Rurradweg zwischen Monschau 🇩🇪 und Sourbrodt 🇧🇪
Wonderful varied round trip starting in Monschau.
Up to Sourbrodt in Belgium, the Venn cycle path was always slightly uphill. Never particularly steep so I didn't find it difficult. Through Sourbrodt and through forest and Belgian Fens back towards Küchelscheid, where I crossed the Vennradweg and then came back to Monschau on the Rurradweg.
Through the beautiful Monschau, which always …

Today, in beautiful sunny weather, we cycled along the Vennbahn cycle path to Sourbrodt in Belgium and back along the Rurufer cycle path via Monschau, which was this time in the sun. The tour was almost car-free up to Monschau and was wonderful to cycle on. The landscape was wonderfully green and everything was wonderfully quiet. Everything along the Vennbahn …

I wanted to go where the Rur rises near Sourbrodt. Unfortunately, the last piece is not passable because it is on private property and totally overgrown. If anyone knows another way, please let me know.

From Konzen through the High Fens, here our junctions 24, 51, 52, 53, 69, 85, 63, 71, 86, 83, 80, 79 and Vennbahnweg back. Let's see which routes we haven't ridden in this area yet. And drive again soon. Always beautiful.
