The trail is a loop that begins and ends at Buda Badplats, located south of Grums in Värmland, Sweden. This is also the primary access point for parking.
The estimated completion time for the 5.3 km (3.3 miles) loop trail is approximately 2 hours, though this can vary based on individual pace and stops.
The terrain is varied and can be quite demanding. You'll encounter ascents and descents as the path winds around Lake Vänern, through pine forests, hazel groves, and mixed woodlands, and up a mountain. Some sections are particularly steep, with ropes fixed to rocks or trees to assist. Expect smooth boulders near the lake and occasional wet or muddy spots, so good footwear is essential.
Due to its varied and sometimes steep terrain, the trail is categorized as 'medium-hard' or 'Red - demanding'. While not extremely long, the challenging sections with ropes and potentially slippery surfaces might be difficult for absolute beginners or those not accustomed to hiking. It's rated as an easy hike on komoot, but hikers should be prepared for some strenuous parts.
The trail offers diverse scenery including beautiful panoramic views over Lake Vänern. You'll pass through Kycklingdalen, a biotop-protected area known for its unique flora and rich birdlife. Highlights include Wooden Sculptures by Lake Vänern, a Pebble Beach by the Lake, and a Shelter with fireplace and view of Lake Vänern. There are also inviting cliffs for breaks and a cold spring.
Yes, the trail offers numerous opportunities for stunning photos. You'll find beautiful panoramic views over Lake Vänern, especially from various points along the coast and higher elevations. The inviting cliffs also serve as excellent spots for breaks and scenic pictures.
The trail can be enjoyed during most seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer is great for enjoying the lake and swimming. Winter hiking is possible, but conditions may be challenging with snow and ice, requiring appropriate gear.
While the trail is generally accessible, there is no specific information provided regarding dog-friendliness or leash rules. It's always advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially in protected areas like Kycklingdalen, and to follow local regulations.
No, there is no mention of any permits or entrance fees required to hike the Kycklingleden Trail. It is a publicly accessible trail.
The trail passes through Kycklingdalen, a biotop-protected area renowned for its rich birdlife, with over 38 rare species identified. While specific sightings are never guaranteed, birdwatching is a definite possibility. The diverse woodlands also support various other small animals.
Yes, there is a cold spring present on the trail, offering a refreshing stop. However, it's always recommended to carry your own water, especially on longer hikes or during warmer weather, as the spring's reliability or potability might vary.
A wonderful, entertaining tour through the finest Swedish nature. The Kycklingleden (Chicken Trail) is not that long, but young and old discover so many things that it seems like a day's walk. The landscape changes extremely quickly. From the rocky coastal section to boggy branches to deep, hilly forests with the chance of seeing moose. Unfortunately, they didn't show up, but we saw countless frogs, toads, seagulls, albatrosses, squirrels and mosquitoes too ;-) There were also winding paths, climbing sections and swimming spots. All in all, a relaxed but no less interesting tour. Fun fact: It is said that if everyone in the world were to swim in Lake Vänern at the same time, the water level of the lake would rise by just 4 cm! Lake Vänern is not only Sweden's and Scandinavia's largest lake, but also the largest lake in the EU. Thanks to its archipelago, there are around 22,000 islands in Vänern! It is often even referred to as an inland sea. 👏 4.37 new kilometers -- From Wandrer.earth ⚠️ Post Scriptum Unfortunately, I was unable to post this beautiful tour earlier. Thanks to the unusable @komoot app for iOS, I am never able to add photos to a tour without a computer. And I don't post a tour without pictures. It's a shame that @komoot still hasn't found a solution after several years. The app simply remains unusable because it regularly freezes, even after reinstalling.
The Chicken Valley is a moderately difficult footpath of 5.7 km and meanders along the edge of Vänern, through a hazel grove and mixed terrain with conifers. In the area, more than 2 square kilometers, the damage from the great forest fire can still be seen, and over 38 rare species have been identified in the mixed forest and the peculiar chicken valley. The orange markings make it easy to follow the footpath and you are welcome to take a break at the rest area (at the highest point 114 meters above sea level) or at the lowest point (at the spring at 44 meters above sea level). There are benches to sit along the path and every now and then you will find signs indicating where to rest and enjoy the surroundings. The endangered smooth snake and the sweet scale wurz have been discovered here. The pretty willow warbler is very common here in the woods and the osprey and pike hunt among the reeds in the lake below. We hope you have an enjoyable hike and ask that you throw all rubbish in the rubbish bins here at the start of the trail. - Original text on the board at the beginning of the hike -
Since we walked without a break, we were also here for 2 hours on the move. The description of the "chicken path" can be found in the pictures :-) The path goes over hill & dale, up & down. It is very varied, but also demanding on wet ground like today. Very nice circular hiking trail ... and definitely a recommendation if you are in the region.
