Road cycling

The Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop offers a truly unique road cycling experience, winding through dramatic red rock formations and expansive desert vistas just outside Las Vegas. You'll navigate a challenging 54.8-mile (88.2 km) route with 3294 feet (1004 metres) of elevation gain, passing iconic Aztec sandstone cliffs and sparse Joshua tree forests. The initial miles involve a sustained climb, rewarding you with breathtaking views from spots like the High Point Overlook before transitioning to exhilarating downhill stretches.

Planning your ride requires a few considerations. There's an entrance fee to access the loop, but cyclists enjoy a lower rate and are exempt from the timed entry reservations required for vehicles during peak season. Given the desert environment, it's critical to carry plenty of water and sun protection, as shade is virtually nonexistent along the route. Avoid cycling during the intense summer heat for safety.

This difficult route, typically taking around 4 hours and 11 minutes, is a favorite among experienced cyclists for its smooth pavement and generally wide shoulders. The 25 mph speed limit for vehicles enhances the cycling experience, making it feel safer and more enjoyable. It's a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Mojave Desert, offering a stark contrast to the nearby urban sprawl.

First Pullout (Calico I)

Highlight • Parking

The First Pullout (or Calico I) is the first parking area on the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area Scenic Loop. There is a large viewing area here with several benches, informational signs, and a pit toilet. The Calico Hills were once a part of one of the largest dune fields ever to form on earth over 180 million years ago. What remains of these lithified dunes are some of the most famous features in the park; the striking Aztec sandstone formations make for great photos and even greater hiking and scrambling. From this parking lot you can access several trails and some of the most famous rock climbing crags in the area. If you wish to climb, you do not need a permit to do so (aside from the initial entrance fee into the scenic loop), but please do not climb after rain or snow. The sandstone weakens significantly after exposure to water and can break. Regardless of whether you are a climber or not, it is fun to see them ascending the spectacular, colorful rock faces above you from the parking lot and along the trails.

The High Point Overlook, as the name implies, is the highest point on the one-way Scenic Loop. Once you hit this point, the majority of the major climbing is done, so this is a great place to pause, grab a sip of water, and admire the stunning views!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to cycle the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop?

The main scenic drive itself is about 12-13 miles long. For a racebike, completing the loop typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to enjoy the views. If you start from areas like Las Vegas Cyclery, the total ride can extend to 30 miles.

What is the terrain and difficulty like for cyclists on this route?

The Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop is generally considered a moderate to difficult ride. The first 4 to 6 miles are primarily uphill, featuring long, gradual ascents and some steeper climbs with gradients up to 8-9%. After the initial demanding climb to the High Point Overlook, the ride becomes mostly downhill, but still includes fast, curving sections and a few short, steep uphill spots. The pavement is generally smooth, but be aware of potential debris or loose gravel.

Are there any entrance fees or permits required for cycling the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop?

Yes, an entrance fee is required to access the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. During peak season (October 1 - May 31), timed entry reservations are necessary for vehicles, but cyclists are exempt from this reservation requirement.

What is the best time of year to cycle the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop?

The best time to cycle is during the cooler months, from fall (October-November) through spring (March-May). Summer temperatures in the Mojave Desert can be extreme, making cycling very challenging and potentially dangerous due to lack of shade and water sources. Winter can also be pleasant, though mornings can be chilly.

Where can I park to access the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop?

You can park at the Visitor Center or the First Pullout (Calico I). There are numerous pullouts and parking lots along the loop itself, but these are primarily for stopping during the ride, not for initial access.

What notable sights or viewpoints can I see along the route?

The loop offers breathtaking views of vibrant red rock formations and desert landscapes. Key viewpoints include the High Point Overlook and the Red Rock Canyon Overlook. You'll also find numerous pullouts for photo opportunities and to appreciate the striking Aztec sandstone formations.

Is the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, they must be kept on a leash at all times. Be mindful of the hot pavement and lack of shade, especially during warmer months, which can be dangerous for pets.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Downtown to Red Rock Bike Trail and the Calico Hills Trail. You may also encounter smaller segments of the Angel Park Trail and the Western Beltway Trail.

What makes this cycling route unique compared to other options near Las Vegas?

The Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop stands out due to its one-way road for vehicles, which enhances safety for cyclists. It offers a dramatic contrast to the Las Vegas Strip, providing a sense of vast wilderness just 15-20 miles away. Its significant elevation gain also makes it an excellent training ground for climbs.

Are there facilities like restrooms or water available along the loop?

Bathrooms are available at most pullouts along the scenic drive. However, there are no dedicated water sources directly on the loop itself, so it's crucial to carry plenty of water, especially given the desert environment.

What should I bring for a bike ride on the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop?

Given the desert environment and challenging terrain, you should bring plenty of water, sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), and appropriate cycling gear. A helmet is essential. Consider bringing snacks, a basic bike repair kit, and your phone for emergencies. Layers are advisable during cooler months as temperatures can vary.
