This route was planned by komoot.
This tour is rated as moderate by komoot. However, be aware that it is designed for experienced riders and requires very good fitness and advanced riding skills. You'll encounter demanding single trails, strenuous climbs, and exhilarating descents through deep, dense beech mixed forests.
The tour starts from Rodalben. While specific parking details aren't provided, Rodalben is the primary access point. For public transport, you would need to check local bus or train connections to Rodalben, as the Palatinate Forest is well-connected to surrounding towns.
The terrain is diverse, featuring a high percentage of single trails (around 18% of the route), challenging climbs, and technical descents. You'll ride through natural, winding paths in beech mixed forests. Some sections may be slightly blocked with stones, occasionally requiring you to dismount and push your bike.
The tour offers impressive vistas, especially from elevated points. A highlight is the climb to the Eschkopfturm, the highest point at 619 meters, which provides expansive views extending far into the French Northern Vosges. You'll also pass by the View of Ringelsberg and the Hilschberghaus, a welcoming hut.
While the Palatinate Forest Nature Park generally allows dogs, it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially on shared trails and near wildlife. Given the challenging nature of this mountain bike tour, with technical sections and fast descents, it might not be suitable for all dogs or for riding with a dog.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to ride MTB Park Pfälzerwald: Tour 1 or to enter the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The trails are freely accessible. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning nature conservation and trail etiquette.
The Palatinate Forest is beautiful year-round, but for mountain biking, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) generally offer the most pleasant conditions with mild temperatures and vibrant scenery. Summer can be warm, and winter might bring snow or icy conditions, making some sections more challenging or impassable.
Yes, the Palatinate Forest is known for its welcoming huts. The Hilschberghaus is a highlight along this specific route, offering a chance for refreshment. It's always a good idea to check opening times in advance, especially outside peak season.
Yes, this route is part of the extensive trail network in the Palatinate Forest. It primarily follows the official "MTB-Park Pfälzerwald, Tour 1" route. Additionally, sections of the trail overlap with other paths such as "Gräfensteiner Land", "Wandern in Clausen C8 Rund um Clausen", and the "Pfälzer Waldpfad".
Given the moderate difficulty and technical sections, you should bring a well-maintained mountain bike, a helmet, appropriate protective gear, sufficient water and snacks, a repair kit, and a first-aid kit. A navigation device with the route loaded is also highly recommended, as well as weather-appropriate clothing.
No, this tour is not recommended for beginners or families with young children. It requires very good fitness and advanced riding skills due to its demanding single trails, strenuous climbs, and technical descents. There are other, less challenging routes available in the Palatinate Forest that would be more suitable for families or those new to mountain biking.
Simply a fantastic area for mtb driving. Fabulous landscape and the trails are first class 😍. Unfortunately, 10 km from the finish, one of the two allen screws on my saddle broke off, so I had to do the rest of the tour more or less standing up. But then first a hearty meal + beer in the Hilschberghaus
For people who don't live in the Palatinate .... from Rodalben to Clausen via Merzalben and back.
I still have a small part of MTB Tour 1 in the Palatinate Forest to complete, so this afternoon I cycle up to Leimen. It's quite chilly at first, and I'm grateful for the climb to warm up. I simply skip a flight of stairs and plan a more manageable route at the same altitude. I know Leimen from a previous tour, where I had to push almost the entire time. But this time I'm pleasantly surprised by the easy-to-ride gravel path, and so I pedal slowly uphill in first gear with my small "Opakettenblatt" (o-packet leaf) in the front, which I replaced with the original. The forest is beautiful; I'm finally back in the Indian summer. The colorful leaves are still glistening in the bright sun. But ahead of me, dark rain clouds are gathering from the east. They're going to hit me, I think. Fortunately, only a few drops fall, caught by the trees, and it stays dry below. As I leave the forest in Leimen, the sun shines again. From the village, it's essentially all downhill to the starting point. The only thing that spoils the fun is a short stretch of coarse gravel. Time and again, there are magnificent views of the beautiful villages and Gräfenstein Castle. 😄 Indian Summer · Shiva https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d24LrHZ297g
