The From Van Gerhagen to de Weefberg trail is approximately 18.2 kilometers long and generally takes around 4 hours and 40 minutes to complete. This duration can vary depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
While some sources describe this 18.2 km trail as suitable for 'advanced hikers' due to its length, its difficulty is officially rated as moderate. The varied terrain and elevation changes make it an engaging experience, but it's certainly manageable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.
The trail offers a diverse landscape, transitioning through deciduous and coniferous forests, sand dunes, heathland, and fen areas. You'll mostly walk on unpaved forest paths, sand paths, and some bridle paths, with a few paved sections interspersed. A notable feature is de Weefberg, an actual ironstone hill.
You'll encounter several highlights, including the tranquil Pinnekensweier Pond and Wet Heathland, a moment of reflection at Anne & Nera’s bench ❤, and The Poephaan Tram Route Information Board. Other notable sights include a bird hide at Munninckxgoor, a watchtower, the Bosmuseum in Gerhagen, the Klompenmuseum, and the idyllic Weefbergven.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn often offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with mild temperatures and beautiful natural colors. Summer can be warm, while winter might bring colder weather, though the varied landscapes remain appealing.

October 6, 2024 A sunny Sunday: walking in and around the abbey of Averbode, from Gerhagen to the Weefberg, through the deciduous forest, the heath, the inland dunes and the fens (landscape park De Merode); I have never seen so many different mushrooms together!! Afterwards a tour of the inner domain of the abbey
We start in Averbode for a walk through forest and heath. On our path the Weefberg, fens and inland dunes. We knit a loop through the Gerhagen nature reserve, along the Pinnekesweier and the forest museum. We take our lunch break there, including a climb of the tower and a look in the museum. Of course we end with an ice cream at the abbey:-) The ideal mix of beautiful heathland spots, fens and cooling forests, almost entirely on unpaved nature paths!
Averbode Bos en Heide, what a beautiful region for immersing yourself in nature, composed of woods, ponds, moors, and marshes. The proximity and crossing of roads contrasts somewhat with the tranquility of the woods, enlivened by birdsong. The trails and paths are largely sandy, a real treat for Nordic walking. The proximity of the ponds and marshes is currently signaled by the croaking of frogs and other amphibians. Although there is almost no relief, Averbode Abbey is the "highlight" of this route.
The videos are a few years old, but the whole area around the Abbey of Averbode and the Merode forests has only become more beautiful in my opinion. Beautiful hiking area. https://youtu.be/8qxI_kJMmwo
